Ever felt this whenever you play games?
« on: July 11, 2009, 01:47:44 am »
You found an online game you like very much, and you decided to play it.

When you connect to the game, you found that almost every server are 200 ping and above. Since one of the lower ping of the 200 ping servers are popular, you join in. You played well even for a first timer. Then in the middle of it all, someone remarks "YOU LAG! GTFO!". Sooner or later, you get kicked or everyone leaves in rebellion. You join another one of those 200 ping servers, and the same happens to you, all the time. Those servers with 300 ping and above, you don't want to play in them due to excessive levels of lag and the fact that you'd get kicked too anyway.

Now, you managed to find a low ping server. "At last," you sigh with relief, and you join that server. To your dismay, you can't understand a single shit everyone is saying because they are speaking in another language, and it turns out that the server was also modded in some way, changing the default gameplay. Worse yet, due to conflicts in communication, you may also end up getting kicked as well.

And what's even more depressing? It wasn't your internet connection - it was pretty good. It's your location. Worst of all, no locals or players from neighbouring countries play the game you so love. Other players get the benefit of having their own popular local servers, but you don't, and are forced to play in another server as a "lagger". No one wants to play in lag and no one likes laggers too, but what else can you do? Play some other game? No way!

How many of you came across this situation? I know I do, all the time, and it's beginning to get on my nerves.

Or live somewhere better.

Something like this happens to me in TF2 all the time. There is simply no such thing as an unmodified server. There are tons of shit servers out there, but there aren't any that play the game the way it was designed for 9 years.

It boggles my mind that valve would let some retard fuck up their game because he's too impatient to wait for the respawn.

There's worse - when the game does have a local community and servers with good ping, but everyone's retarded.

Jedi Knight 2 stopped being fun with the hungarian only servers very, very fast. :\

Did I decide I liked it before I decided to play it? That doesn't sound like me. =/

No. I live in America; there are always tons of people ready to waste their lives playing a game. I quit playing online games because 1. I won't play for them 2. the free ones suck miserably.

It must be hell living in Poland.

But really, I'm surprised why you don't revolt against your internet companies and force them to provide cable internet.

Wow, STM are you sure you ain't my double? O_O
I live in the mid-east, in Jordan.
Therefore, I naturally have an average ping of 15-200 on Euro servers, and 300+ on U.S servers, anything else is 5000-9999...
And people call me a lagger...
I have a 1 gig connection, which I pay for from my own work.
But shitty for me I'm one of maybe (100?) Arabs that play soldat, or CS...
So ffs people, have mercy...

The AUS CTF pubs are fine, but unfortunately NZers play in our servers.  :<

other than that, I never have to worry about not being able to find a game.

Player since late 2007

Ah, I know exactly what you mean, especially in relation to soldat. The ping isn't the trouble, but i get about 25 servers that would probably be low enough ping for me to play in and this is what it looks like:

retarded weapon mod
retarded weapon mod
r/s
r/s
zombie server
retarded weapon mod
climb server
climb server
climb server
r/s
zombie server
trench wars
and so on

Seriously, there is only ONE server in my ping range that plays regular soldat. Everything else is some uber idiotic shit server. And that one server is Fractured CTF. Seriously, I came back to Soldat a couple months ago to start playing again, but it's really hard to get into it when every single server is something ridiculously stupid.

Thank god the german servers are low ping, without so many retards as on polish and often plain ctf. I've recently noticed that from hundreds of available servers I'm playing at dozen.

Wow, prejudice is definitely taking over in soldat.
Did you know poles have some of the best internet connections ever?

It doesn't change the fact that poles are one of the most hated members in the community, for a reason.

I get this all the time. I live in Hawaii (in the US), so despite my decent connection I can never get my ping below like 130, and the only normal servers I can find are between 200-350 ping. It's kind of a bummer, but on a positive note I'm getting pretty good at zombie maps.

Living in Denmark with a 20mb connection, I never really have any problems with this. However, my computer is really ancient, so it's only games like soldat that make me feel special and blessed.

And on another positive note, you live on Hawaii. Why the fuck are you wasting your time on computers? I'm telling you right now, pick up your shit, and go to the beach! NOW!

Believe me I love the beach, but we just had a near-miss with a hurricane (downgraded to a tropical depression), and now another one possibly on its way so it's extremely rainy and overcast here. Not exactly beach weather.

If I was living at a place like Hawaii, I would be out in the wild all the time. If not surfing, then climbing. Or even better, go visit the telescope on Mauna Kea.

I suppose I should clarify, I am actually in Oahu (Hawaii refers to an island as well as the island chain itself), so no telescope. And although most people imagine Hawaii as some sort of paradise, it really loses its magic after a while, what with the crazy traffic and high cost of living. Despite all that, there are some great hiking trails and of course the gorgeous beaches, so I guess it's worth it.

Yeah, I could imagine all the urbanism would get to you pretty quickly. The wild should still be breathtaking, if you're into that sort of thing.
