The Contest:
Idea of Contest:
The most of default maps have been the same from day they were selected into Soldat. There's need for developing default maps: some of the maps aren't played much, some might look boring and some might have bugs. It's not a promise, but I believe upcoming Soldat versions have use for remakes.

Special Info:
Only ctf maps are recognized for contest. You are allowed to use original default map as a base but you can also make full remake (which is preferable if you are going to remake map in different size). You can consider only develop looks or fixing gameplay issues. Remember that we don't want to ruin basic structure of maps. I wish you name the map related default name, for example, ctf_Laosremix ctf_Laos3, etc (remember check that mapname is not already on use).

I highly recommend that you select a map that isn't popular, especially when you aim for full remake. So don't try find new gameplays in ctf_Ash (opening new routes, adding polyislands), it won't be so likely that it could get into official version. I also recommend replying into this topic which default map you are going to remake, so that we would get as many remakes as possible from different default maps.

Equinaxe was the best remake, it improved the map in every aspect.  I vote it to replace the current.

I voted RunS and Chernobyl2, very good maps.

Most of boxo's maps were flawed in gameplay and looks, as well as some other maps were a bit too dark or unbalanced like smiluu's Dormant. Some maps might have looked good, but could have used some more stuff like colliders or cave backgrounds or they had removed some aspects of the original which were really good like the camo nets in the top route of lanubya for example.

The one's that should be replaced would be the ones least played at SCTFL. Although it's a sample size, it's a good amount of players to determine that those aren't popular maps and need some revamping.

Also take in account that the ones that are last, are usually last in consecutive seasons and seems to be an ongoing trend. Lanubya, Ruins and Equinox are ones that should definitely be in consideration for replacement.

I think they all need graphical updates, and certain poly bug fixes.
On top of that, there's only a few that need reconstruction!

Poppin's remake is probably my fav!

The remakes don't look as smooth as the originals.
Most of them have lost certain curves that were really fun.

Graphical update, poly bug fixes and keeping the entire maps the same with maybe an extra tunnel here and there, or a poly island, and colliders to prevent spraying and better spawn points would have went further, rather then messing with curves and such!

Edit: And they've tried to open the maps up to much. Might be faster game play for auto weapons, but servers like snipe and slice and realistic are less playable if areas are to open!

Still, nice maps. I wish I could map! :'(

I don't think that was the idea. Even if some of them would be added as official, in some cases the new one not necessarily has to replace the older, I think. Just thinking like dust and dust2 coexist on CS, for example, or  maya and maya2 on soldat.

But, yeah, it was hard to choose even with six options. It's a lot of really good maps.

I'm kinda dissapointed with the contest results. Most of the maps are made in "Roundy PW" style or just some chopped-off old ones... mediocrity in a word...

Dormant could be great if not that blurry overstretched texturing and balance issues.

DeathZ also could be nice, if only zakath didn't screw all the top...

Stardrop... too bad that poppin didn't make any more updates...

Mold, Maija, Conflict are ok.

Im gonna nail VTT's dick into a brikwall for making me wait so long. GRRRH >: [[
hmm... since my mapping creativity level is quite unstable i usually prefer not to announce anything...
dunno when i'm gonna finish this Noobia... polystructure is mostly ready (over 3k of polygons) but there is still a lot of work to be done...

We were a bit suprised about number of maps made for the contest. As we can notice the level of remake is different in maps. Imo, some of the maps are overmade and some undermade.

To me the main goal of contest was to find alternatives for unpopular default maps, which have serious gameplay issues. So in my view, if map is popular, there's nothing wrong at it.

the only map that it's not new on 1.5 that wasn't remake was ctf_Cobra
maybe it's because cobra is a remake of snakebyte xD

ctf_Steel wasn't remade, but that was explained already

Now that I've play tested some of them (against bots)

B2bZ by Zakath is probably my favorite.
It's been the most improved so far. And I tested most of them!

The #1 voted is apparently Equinaxe.. It's only decent I think; everything is rounded too much. If there were boxes the left of left flag and right of right flag like on Equinox it would be better.



Also... WHY AREN'T SCREENSHOTS OF THE MAPS WITHOUT TEXTURES REQUIRED?!?

Where ice is or death poly's, shows what it would be like to play the map in real matches. "Well I don't think it would be very balanced if you get stuck on that wall immediately after getting the flag.." etc etc.

Thats just personal opinions.

For example for me, Wraithlike's map is no good, atleast if compared to the original one. He rounded alot of the parts and streched out the areas way too much and cramped up the whole map to a smaller size. Then he removed some good things from the original like the bends in the low route and he basically changed the low route that its just a boring route as same as the top one. The cave in the original gave it some depth that there were varied areas in the map as in where this one is just monotonic. And the whole visual style is just too plain imo.

The original was difficult to move through and has tons of gameplay issues.

One being the size of the way, it was too large.  There was always spray and boosting issues with the upper route.  The lower route also has problems with camping.

The polygon structure is awkward in the remake and doesn't allow fully smooth movement.  With the remake, he curved many areas, allowing for bunny-hopping and quicker movement.

And with the additional of the spawns and several other adjustments, spawn killing and flag staling is also fixed. 

The original never had good gameplay and I always found it to be one of the worst default maps.  The remake doesn't make it one of the best, it's still far from it, but it's a definite improvement.

It lurks in the deep, waiting for the perfect moment to strike...

Funny, you just listed all the stuff I love about the map. : )

The camping in the low routes was nicely moderated by the collider boxes and it was both fun camping and taking out the campers in that area.

The top route was really fun due to the open space that allowed you to fly pretty freely in that area and m79/nade boosting also was fun there. The fact the map was large was another favorite point of it. It sort of had a semi-slow gameplay on it with a good atmosphere and special areas with their own gimmicks. I really like this map and compared to the very first version, the updated one in 1.5.0 is very good, well improved and it works.


As I said, its all about personal opinion in the end.

Gotta agree I don't really like the new Equi either, Atleast not the looks, they are way to light. Atually the looks of Equi atm are quite awesome, It's just that the map is too big

the new equinox actually stays true to its original name as an equinox is when the sun is directly above the equator and the original map had a moon? I mean whats up with that.
