Probably has been discssed before, but what happened to it? Errors all over the place. I can't see or download maps. Are all the maps saved?

SML has been dead for ages, use TMS instead.

Yeah, SML has been defunct for years now. It was written shittility and the people who care about it no longer do.

Use TMS, my replacement for SML: http://tms.jrgp.org

TMS is not a map hoarder; it's a place for map authors to submit their maps. So if it doesn't have something, it's the map's author's fault, not mine or its.

edit: I've fixed up a few glitches and made SML browsable again. The people who originally wrote it did a bit of a terrible job, and as such it's plagued by security vulnerabilities and bugs which makes it self-fuck every day or so.

Thanks alot! This is GREAT dude!
You're welcome.

However, I've made SML "read-only," so new files cannot be uploaded, hence making it for the most part un-breakable.

For any new maps, I'd strongly recommend using TMS instead as it can't get hacked since I'm extremely paranoid and coded it as such.

No server is virtually unhackable, is it? If someone who was really good wanted to get in, they could, right? But it would make no sense, there is no money involved. Why be so paranoid? Medium security is all a small site like TMS needs imo. As long as it's not saying "HERE I AM HACK ME!", like SML was saying, apparently. But, that's just my 2 cents, more security is better.

It's not the server itself; most security issues come from lazy web developers. What makes a site completely secure is using correct coding habits and not taking the short/quick/easy way out. I code like that. The original coders of SML did not. That's the difference.

There are no such terms as medium/high/small/etc security.

And just because money isn't really involved, a site getting hacked can also mean a severe loss of content (maps, posts, etc) and hard work.

mike,

Just because no money changes hands because of SML/TMS, there are many reasons to hack/compromise the site (and many other sites):
- Compromise the site itself to use php to send mail
- Compromise the site to attack other sites/accounts on the local machine
- Compromise the site to use it as a host for malicious files that are linked from spam messages (virus payloads)
- Same as above, except used to host files that botnets retrieve
- Compromise the site to host spam pharma and other frontend sites

... and many more.  All of those have direct relationships to a spammer's bottom line (income/revenue stream).

If you're interested in this aspect of security, take a look through some of the spam you get.  Mouseover the URLs until you see one that looks like a small business or personal site.  Many times the malicious stuff will be buried in an innocuous-looking subfolder and the original site will be intact.  While I was in college and didn't feel like doing homework, I'd often browse my spam folder and notify owners of those sites that they've been compromised and offer my input on best practices to fix it and prevent it from happening again.

SML's upload system has been horribly designed since day 1.  jrgp is interested in repairing the site and bringing its functionality back, but I have him working on some higher priority projects right now.  For now he has disabled the upload functions, because they were being abused with .htaccess files to attempt to create malicious redirects (fortunately they did not work this time).

Wow, I knew thought of that before. Thanks for the info, and your time in writing it ;)

Why does jrgp want to fix it, when there is already TMS? Just something to do?

Nice to see people have no respect for people who have left and gone and done their own things. Well thanks to the wonderful thing called the internet I can go back a few months and still read what was said. SML was originally created because of something that I felt was missing in the community, a site specifically geared towards creating/hosting custom maps for Soldat. Before I created it, I didn't know a thing about php, what an if statement was, or even what a loop did. It was not at all about me being lazy. If I was lazy I wouldn't have put in countless hours creating the site. And its not that I don't care about the website, perhaps I've moved on and you can't expect me to still manage a website for a game I no longer am interested in playing. The site was never originally created to be a showcase of web development.

Sorry for bumping this but I only come on these forums every once in a blue moon to read stuff that may still be related to anything I've done. Was surprised to see this as the first thing I read and I feel sometimes forget something called respect.

Why did it die? I know some bahonises commented on maps with extracts from the most popular fiction novel without a proper plot development, the bible, and segments from viagra ads, but what broke it? Or ya, SS, decided to tear it down?
Btw, remember the days?

The people who initially wrote it did an epicly s**tty job and as a result it's getting hacked by malicious bots which crawl the net looking for insecure sites to deface.

edit: I've just restored the main code from backups. It should be fine until the bots come back and rape it again.

Regardless, if you want reliable map hosting, either use the forums file attachments or TMS.

Well maybe you would be respected more if you had been less of a cunt to the people you worked with... http://archive.forums.soldat.pl/topic.php?topic_id=18917

There is no need to bring up discussions and mudslinging from that long ago.

The fact is that SS moved on and SML fell by the wayside.  Yes, it is prone to getting pwned by bots right now, so it is offline more often than it is up.  jrgp and I put some effort into keeping it online and closing the loopholes so it preserves value as an archive.  That link is outdated, SoulSnipa has taken ownership of SML between then and now (that thread is over 5 years old), and has since left it... so the archive thread is really irrelevant at this point by virtue of being ancient history :)

Came back because I saw the site was up.

I may or may not have been a cunt but that's not really an excuse to revive the thread. Plus half the people in the thread, including yourself, don't even know half of what was said or why it was said. I still don't know what you are looking to accomplish by posting that here and then plugging your own website in a random thread like this. Guess that's what admins with 3396 posts do around here now.

But with that said I enjoyed reading it again. Sort of pathetic I put that much time into one post, but at least I've moved on. If anything it showed how important all that work was to me at the time.

And hey...vig?

Admittedly, I admit my epic lack of liking for you, but that is no reason why you should be insulting my reply and especially not my own website. Apparently you're far too lazy to check it out, but it is, in fact, my "SML Replacement" that I've been working on (and people have been submitting maps to) since 2006.

Oh, and at least half the reason why SML is back is because of me. So, I believe a thanks are in order. :P
