Soldat lags under Wine
« on: August 18, 2009, 01:40:36 am »
Can somebody tell me how to fix up soldat in Linux/Wine? When I run Soldat through Wine, the sound gets choppy, and my guess at an average fps would be 0.2 - 0.5. Seriously, it gets to the point where it can take 5 seconds or so to go to the next frame. Its unplayable, and crashes the system.

I'm sure its not my computer; my specs are 3.9 GHz Pentium 4, 1 GB of RAM, 150 GB of free HD space, and a ATI Radeon X600XT graphics card with 3d acceleration. I think this is far beyond what is needed for Soldat 1.5 to run, even through Wine, so i'm convinced it has to be settings based. I tried windowed, no particles, low sound quality, poor bot seeing etc; no improvement.

I'm running Win XP and openSUSE parallel, but the only use I have for XP is playing Soldat, and Warcraft III, so do I have to switch OSs every time I need to play Soldat?

See the stickied Soldat on Linux systems thread.

Have you tried compatibility mode in config.exe?

Well, the main thing you can do is make sure you have the latest build of Wine installed. Some distros, like Ubuntu keep an older version of Wine in their repositories. I don't know about Suse, but you can make sure you're running the latest on that distro here: http://en.opensuse.org/Wine#Repositories

And how much free space you have really does not matter at all.

edit: also, I really don't have much hope for Soldat under wine, especially since each new version of Soldat seems to break it even further. This is why I have a Windows laptop and keep my desktop Linux exclusive.
