Yes it can, it just works less gracefully than png/svg, since with GIF each pixel can only be transparent or a solid color, not a combination like the other formats I mentioned.

yeah, I guessed he meant transparent as in half-way, but that would defeat the purpose since the subject has a strong affinity to the yellow background.  Without it, it's just another cartoon

You can. That website allows you to split the frames.
Don't you just make each frame transparent, then rejoin them?

Or keep the effect and use the forums background color instead of the yellow color. You have the transparency AND the antialiasing effect. Looks good, though, just make it faster and add maybe some more frames.
