New player menu
« on: September 30, 2009, 09:54:38 pm »
Well... yea... one of my suggestion series ;)!
Especially "character preview" is strongly suggested so people don't have to create/join games to check their character's color.

TEN TIMES BETTER. F12. Even though there should be a drop down box or the selections should be closer together, and add more things like something for your body or feet. Capes, more helmets, different types of hair, boots and such, symbols... Soldat needs more modding capabilities.

There should be a color drop down for skin color.

Nice redesign. I hope the menu will be redone this way soon. Also, here are my 2 cents on body customisation:

Controls:
"Fly" belongs more in the movement section, and
"Change/Drop/Reload Weapon" in the combat section.

That is exactly how I wanted it. Plus, more room for things to be added.

Thats better! You know what would be cool tho, could you try putting a logo of SOLDAT in the background or something...or maybe underneath. Just a suggestion to see what it would look like. Maybe in large white letters, transparent. Just to experiment.

Really nice work!

I have a few suggestions and questions for the second picture you posted:

Maybe it would be better to have no background tree in the preview so that you only see what you want to see the gotesk.

I would make the gray area around the down arrow symbol green and the 3 buttons default edit key and clear key green.

Could you describe how the default, edit key and clear key button would work?
I would prefer to have buttons to set the key like it is now just with text (maybe only the assigned key as a green button and the description just a label like it's now on your mockup)

The mouse sensitivity edits should look like normal edits (white background and black text).
I think that way it would fit more into Soldat.

The background of the bar could be the dark "gray" color from the unselected tabs at the top black isn't used anywhere it stands out too much imho.

I wonder if the little head gfx would fit better when they are displayed after the text:
[headgear: | Helmet <helmetgfx> | v]

That way they would appear horizontally at the same position it might be easier look at the gfx when too lazy to read the text.

You are doing a good job here ;)

If you 2 were top make a team there'd be great things coming for soldat.

Very nice redesign of dropdown menus. Compact but still shows a lot. Good idea with the previews, but with full preview at the top-left they aren't really necessary.

IMO on that screenshot there's not enough of green. I'd say let's keep the "default/edit/clear" buttons green. Also, what's the point of the "edit" button if you need to click on the key itself to edit it? And I don't think there's a need for "clear" button either. I think they should be shown in a popup window when you're actually setting the key. Something like this:

Oh by the way.. might be a good idea to add another column for a 2nd set of keys (so that you can assign 2 different keys to one thing). "Left/right click" can be shortened to "Mouse #" or LMB/RMB (left/right mouse button)

Nah, soldat is one of those games that don't require you to have primary and secondary key sets, it would just become too complicated.

Can we also add a new feature to the "Other" section. How about having Scores too? Like it's F1 at the moment. What if someone wanted to make something else. Can we able to change that too. And people actually don't know how to check the scores in the first place without checking all the keys.

Yeah! Add a section for a scoreboard choice. Selectable versions should be classic, Team (as in, players are grouped in the side-by-side one), and so on.
Put in the Gamma bar right next to the Mouse slider, it would fit, and make it look nicer, which would also give more room for things in the Options.

Gamma setting has absolutely nothing to do with player options though. It shouldn't be added just because it's a slider too. :/

Quickly, what is that font and font size used for the image? I just got CS4 Premium suite, and I would like to make my own version.
I figured it out.

Bank Gothic Light BT. It's actually in the Soldat folder (bgothl.ttf). Size - I just eyeballed it. Around 12 maybe?

Player indicator and sniper line.. those aren't really options for player himself, they're for the in-game interface. Perhaps there should be "GUI" section in the options (not player options)? It could have those 2 options, as well as the menu to choose interfaces. I think they would belong together better.

kzya
Maybe you should rename this thread into "New options menus"? I think we should not only discuss the player options, but also the other options menu and make a few design concepts for that too.

AFAIK, it would be possible only if Soldat menu actually used images. Currently it seems like every element has its hard-coded color. If buttons and backgrounds were replaced with images and if there was a way to change font colors - menu skins would be possible (and is a nice idea too).
I suppose it's possible to hack the colors via hex-editing, but it's not gonna be easy. :|

IMO mouse sensetivety doesn't need a bar, but I agree that it's currently difficult to see if you successfully changed a key or not, so this would be one solution.
