Egg Drop
« on: October 01, 2009, 08:24:35 am »
As most of you are aware of the egg drop, I'll still explain for the others. The egg drop 'competition' (not really a competition in my case) is to see who can build a device which can prevent an egg from cracking or breaking it's shell in any way from a 24 feet (7.62 m) drop.
I am currently unaware of the ground type of this location (probably concrete though).
The priority of this project is pretty low, as even if I fail, it's not important for this class.
The material limitations are: three sheets of (presumably computer) paper, 1 ft of (presumably masking or scotch) tape.

I'm just curious what you guys would brainstorm. I've already come up with a few ideas:
1) Shifting the vertical direction to be horizontal - the paper mechnicasm falls onto it's side, but still coushens the egg and has it roll out though with much speed. - I'm afraid though if there is a wall, and this works too well, the egg would fall and live, but roll out and hit a wall and die on me.
2) Some sort of spring-like in a cylindrical shell - but when it falls over, it may die, may need to coushen the side of the cylinder. The goal is to have the egg up in the air so that theres room for longer period of friction prior to hitting the kooshing. (how do you spell "cooshin" xD)
3) Some spiral thing that slows down the device drastically by spinning it - not too much though has been put into this
4) Some spider-like thing with legs that'll slow it down over time - again not too much thought has been put into this

I'm thinking of maybe possibly combining some of these.

If I'm not lazy, I may create rough pictures / scan my sheet.

Buy two dozen eggs, place them on all over the landing zone and break a few. Toss the egg off the building. When you get down there tell people to point out the one you tossed.

YOU WIN!

Find the max stress an egg can take
Cut that in half
Design a device that only causes that much stress on the egg.

Done.

Try to make a line out of the paper and tape, then just slowly lower the egg.

Triangles!Triangles are the most important part of building stuff. Are you dropping this or is someone else? IE do you have control of the way it is dropped? (Upside down, sideways, etc.)

Three sheets of paper and tape? Those are the strictest egg-drop limitations I've ever heard.

They obviously want a parachute.

1 ft. of tape can't make a parachute :S

when I did this in year 8 we had some paper, pipecleaners and unlimited sticky tape.  The pipecleaners and tape made a good "second shell" for the egg, and the parachute did the rest.

Cut strips off the paper then and use those as the parachute lines.

A multi-tiered parachute with (maybe) one level that can spin (for bonus points), if it doesn't take away from performance overall.

Isn't paper too heavy to be used as a parachute? I would take my chances by just throwing the egg against the concrete.

No, it's not too heavy, though the texture could be a problem.

If it ain't against the rules or whatever, you can make paper more like fabric by crinkling(crumpling?)(LIKE YOU'RE MAKING IT INTO A BALL TO THROW AWAY, Fuck trying to get words for that.) it up a ton. Would help with the parachute part because it can catch more air .

Or maybe make an extremely bottom heavy mass of paper and tape that takes most of the impact and (hopefully) stays upright.

Wad the 3 pieces of paper up into balls, but not too tight. Then half of the tape to hold the paper together in a triangle shape and the rest to hold the egg in the middle of the paper.

If the paper balls are loose enough they'll take the force of the egg and pretty much just bounce a bit, but the egg should be safe...

Edit:
Plus the egg in the middle will prevent the whole thing from tipping...

(Based on Geologist's post  :-*)

You have to play to the strengths of paper, it bends and folds easily but on the thin side it can be fairly ridged. Make a cone out of a page and use another one for cushion, drop the thing letting the cone crumple.

Parachute was a joke btw.

This is a project...way too easy. When I had to do an egg drop in like 8th grade, not only could the egg not break, but it had to travel a certain distance. My egg made a safe landing but didn't travel very far!

Have you thought of melting the paper around the egg to make it act like a sort of shatter-proof shield?
