How to make Soldat Beta versions successful?
« on: November 14, 2009, 02:30:40 pm »
I'm pretty sure that this beta version of Soldat will fail just like the previous beta did because It's not official. Well it is official release but most of the servers are still in 1.5.0.

Do you remember when Soldat 1.5.0 was released? It was supposed to be a flawless edition but hell... All servers were changed into version and diligent players started posting bugs...

If you still didn't understand what I was trying to say then here's the whole text shorter:
More players, more servers = More bug reports.

I hope that you got the point :)

They might complain... Does it change anything? If people whine when the real version is released and it's still bugged. or when it's beta, people barely play it and no bug reports will be posted.

Agreed with Centurion. Question is pretty much if we want 1.5.2 after 1.5.1.

If we act like last time, do nothing. We'll use 1.5.1 as public beta and wait again for 1.5.2.

But if we do our job good, be active and report the bugs. Then we can cheer with 1.5.1 and wait comfortably for 1.6.

#soldat.mapping runs both Euro and NA gather in 1.5.1 Beta, so you are welcomed to play and have fun there. The goal is to make it the most active betatest community.

you can't remove the beta tag if your adding 150 new features and even admitting that it is likely there will be alot of bugs. That would be idiotic.

Instead, official releases should only add 1 or 2 new features and be released occasionaly, and concentrating more on bugfixes. Rather than adding alot of new features and releasing one version every 6 months or so. More features = more potential bugs, therefore you need betas.

the good thing now though is that the auto updated works so in the future that just might work.

what's so hard in playing a beta? in a normal game the clan scene would throw themselves over the beta, but in the soldat beta scene it's like a death sin to play a beta.

There's nothing bad about playing BETA. People just won't download beta themselves to play soldat. "Why should I play beta if I can play soldat 1.5.0" But if there are no servers running 1.5.1 then they are forced to download the beta and play it.

I think regardless, from a personal position that Beta tests are a good idea. It gives us players more of a hands on. And regardless of the amount of bugs in version 1.5.0 just think of how much worse it could have been. Players create situations and find bugs that would not be that easy to find otherwise. I love the hands on. I love the testing. You mean to tell me that if Microsoft sent you a copy of say (for example Halo 4) you wouldnt pop that thing in and play it untill your eyes glazed over. Its a good idea. Beta is a good idea in my opinion. There is not a single game on the market that did not get tested before it was made availale for purchase. Via Beta or otherwise.

wow do you guys really not care at all? Just look at the maps... most have been made extremely small for 3v3 this will ruin the public scene completely, the overmassed scenaries are actually making Soldat require a decent pc.... alot of players just wont be able to play. The general opinion for these new maps speaks for itself... yet the every beta tester i have spoken to on IRC has given me comments like "#care" "what you talking about?" "this is not my opinion..." It seems quite ridiculous that nobody seems to be listening and just calling the mass of well structured/detailed comments about why these new maps won't work are just "whine."

i think you mapper/beta testers need to close the mapmaker and play the damn game!

sigh... deleted comment. It really does pay to do a bit of forum research before posting a dumbass comment. Another facepalm.

All I can say, in response to the title, is that players who are betatesting simply need to know where to report bugs and also be diligent in sending bug reports.

actually if you have any bugs you want fixed you have to report that at the bug tracker at http://bugs.soldat.pl or it wont be so likely that it will be fixed. also steps need to reproduce the bug are needed if you can get it on demo even better post that as well and such.

Sigh, if you weren't an admin of this place you would be trolling. As it is you are just stupid, or possibly just arrogant to the point of ignorance. I'm not sure which is worse.
