Head phones?
« on: December 28, 2009, 12:19:33 am »
I was just curious what brand and style of head phones people use. I use Skull Kandys. They are ear bud style. I just seem to destroy head phones so i wanted some with a warranty. lol. And they dont sound half bad. And on sale i payed about twenty bucks for a set that retails at sixty. I use them for my PC some times, with my PSP and with my I-Pod. Thoughts?

I got Alessandro MS-1i phones, at $150AUD.  They blow all cheap phones out of the water, but they are shit for travelling because so much sound gets in and drowns out the music.  No point even listening to them in the car or on a plane.

When I can afford it, I want to upgrade to these:

Audio Technica ATH-AD1000

They are about $400 though, but I am definitely willing to grab them one day when I feel like upgrading.  I wouldn't mind some nice earbuds too for travelling but first I need to get my hearing problems sorted so they don't make my right ear swell up.

Player since late 2007

These Skull Candy Lowriders cost 50€ and looks and quality of sound are great. This type of Skull Candy can be folded up to decrease the space they take.

Sony MDR-V6. Fantastic pair of headphones. Incredible sound quality, comfortable, and I've had them about 5 years without any problems. They were under $100, and very worth it. In fact I like them more than the MDR-7506's, which cost a lot more, and seems generally inferior.

I also have a pair of AKG-K240 Studio Headphones, which are fantastic as well, but they were about $150, and because of the price I'm hesitant to use them as casually as I use the Sony ones. Still, I've had them slightly longer than the Sony pair, and they still work fantastically. Sadly, the model has been discontinued, so they're hard to find, but you could probably get a pair cheaper than they would have been.

I have a really nice pair of skullcandy headphones but they got snapped in transport, so I need to look into getting them replaced. I want a gaming headset to replace them though

If I had to upgrade I'd get sony in ear buds. ~25 bucks.  I'm no audiophile so I'd never pay over 50.

If you're going for noise cancellation, make sure they have a switch that uses destructive interference to dull outside sound even more.  This can make the price much higher but the effect is amazing.  I found a description that's pretty good  :)

So, what is active noise cancellation, and how does it work? Quite simply, noise-canceling headphones have an external microphone, which picks up any exterior noise. This signal is flipped or reversed, and then fed into the headphone drivers. The result is that the headphone drivers essentially oppose any incident noise, and the net result is that the incident external noise never makes it to your eardrum.

I got a pair of these for Christmas

I also use $10 Skull Candy earbuds which is what you need for casual listening...I don't really understand why more people in this thread and the other headphone thread really use headphones over $30 unless they are rich. Especially for gaming, it really isn't necessary to spend that much money. Just keep it cheap and keep it casual, those $20 pairs do just fine if you know how to take care of them.

I also have these, but they aren't for casual use.

I use these headphones for my music recording and learning my turntables because I need headphones with crisp sounds for my treble and a decent bass response.

Expensive Headphones > Expensive Speakers

Headphones are way better because they provide privacy and comfort.
