Yep, that's exactly why I said "the way our civilization is structured," but you described it perfectly using the word dense. The problem is that people typically want to be as close as possible to services, resources, and other people. In the process of achieving that, they usually tolerate most of the discomfort caused by crowding.

Sounds fun! If you have access to a revolver, you should bring one. I'm not familiar with the wilderness of north Georgia, but I'd piss myself if I ran into a buck or a bear without at least something.
