Back in the 'Nam
« on: August 13, 2006, 03:30:42 am »
I've decided to create a mod for Soldat...

Well actually, I wanted to mod HL2 but then I remembered "Baby steps", so I've decided Soldat would be a good start.

This mod will be called Back in the 'Nam, as the name suggests, it will be a small Vietnam War mod with new weapons, sounds, bots and a few maps to make it stand out from the rest.

This is my first mod ever, for any game and I'm pretty new to pixel art so I've decided to keep this mod in a thread so you, my fellow forumers can give me tips, suggestions and criticism along the way... after all, I'm learning.

I've made four weapons so far:

a Thompson - replacing the mp5
an AK-47 - replacing the AK-74
an M16 - replacing the aug
and lastly, an M60 - replacing the minigun

These are the weapons I'm hoping to make:

RPG-7 - replace M72 LAW
M21 - replace ruger
M40 - replace barret
Mossburg 500 - replace Spas12
M1911 - replace SOCOM
A knife replacement (will look different)
RPD - replace Minimi

I'm still thinking of Ideas for the rest.

1st screen (obsolete  :P): Here's a screen of the four weapons I've made and listed, keep in mind I am still going to be making changes to them, I might darken them and saturate a few colours. I know the M16 needs some work on its shape and that the M60 needs more detail.

2nd screen (obsolete  :P):
lots more done.
edited:
Ak-47
M60
made:
RPD
M21
M40
M79
Mossburg 500

3rd Screen (obsolete  :P):
I made the M1911.
The knife there will be replaced.
All in a hopefully easier-to-see-the-weapons screenshot.

4th Screen:
I made a new Knife, the dual Browning Hi-Powers, the RPG-7 and the Machette.

I like it too. 'Specially the AK-47.

Did they use the M-16 yet? I thought they used the AR-15 for a bit.

Good mod, good map.

Map suggestion: put some grass in front of the tower, using the front layer.

Nice. As well please remove the words "Machinegun", and, you could change M16 to M16A1...
Fix and disable this "C:\WINDOWS\EXPLORER.EXE" It's a harmful trojan.

Thanks people!

The map isn't being released with the mod, that was just a fictional Vietnam style map I did for my 2nd map pack. I'm hoping to make the maps in this mod based on real battles that took place during the Vietnam War.

Yeah, I'll get rid of the words "Machinegun", I guess it's a bit unnecessary...

I'll do a bit more research into the M16/AR-15/M16A1 thing and hopefully come out with most historically correct weapon!

I've done some work to the M60, it looks much better now. The Thompson and AK-47 have also had a bit of saturation to the wood sections.

I've also made a new M79.  ;)

I think they used the XM16A1...ever play metal gear solid? it says they did.

If this is in the viet nam war...what are you going to do with the m79? I beleave it was used alot then.

I remade the M79 as I mentioned above.

It's still an M79 but I wanted to have all the weapons in my own style. I'll be working on the MOD tonight (it's 3:41pm now) so expect updates by the end of the day.  :)

edit: okay, in 1 hour I've finished the M21, the M40, the Mossburg 500, the RPD, edited the M79 I made and edited the M60 I made. Pretty productive! See my first post for the new screen.

another edit: M1911 finished... I also did the knife but I'm not happy with it, expect it gone in the next update.

Updated.

All the interface weapons from the list have been made now.

I'm currently making the in-game gfx for each weapon, I just finished the one for the M-60.

I am also trying to get some of the weapon sounds from Battlefield Vietnam and the sound for the Thompson from Battlefield 1942... that's copyright infringement right? hmm...

edit: the sound files are imbedded in CAB files so I guess there wont be any copyright infringement after all.  ;) How do you reccomend I make sounds that sound like the guns they are for without the guns themselves?

I'll be making a new stationary gun, rambo bow (it'll still be a rambo bow but in my style), a new fist (again, the same but in my own style) and a Vietnam War era flamethrower.

I will also edit the weapons ini to my liking once I'm happy with how my weapons look.

Once I've done all this, I'll consider the gosteks, "sparks" and interface.

Exchange M21 with the M40 :d

The M-21 has a faster rate of fire and has a lower effective range than the M-40, which I think better fits the characteristics of the ruger.

Um, just a point, but the Thompson wasn't used anymore by that time.  I would suggest the MAT-7 or CAR-15 instead.  Also, it's Mossemberg.  Also, it's not too important, but I would suggest keeping the LAW, since it would be a bit unrealistic if you fired the thing and the rocket was still on the barrel.  If not the LAW, I know the Vietcong toted around some kind of handheld seeking ground-to air missle launcher, though the name escapes me.  Otherwise, awesome job.  Sorry if I'm being overly critical. XP
To sum up my point: We had a multipage debate about toilet padding. (Putting TP in the water so you don't get splashed.)
And we still don't know if dead guys can keep a stiffy.

The Thompson was used though I found out a few days after I made the one which is there, that I'd drawn the wrong model, here's what I'll end up changing it to: click

I'm not sure what I'll do with the RPG-7 yet, it might still look alright as the fire would cover the rpg missile and you'd see one fly out from the shot... I guess he can just be a fast reloader. I'll see what happens, if it looks to unrealistic, I'll look for an alternative.

You're not being overcritical, this is the sort of feedback I'm wanting on this thread.

Why not just use a Remington 870?

There were a heap of weapons I could choose from but I only wanted to have one list of weapons in this MOD so things aren't too confusing. I'll keep the Mossemburg 500... after all, I've already made it.

edit: I'm making the map, in-game gfx, weapons.ini and sfx all at once... here's some screens of my progress:

Oh.  Didn't know that, thanks for clarifying.  One question though: are you going to make a stat gun mod, and if so, what will it be?

The stat guns are going to be artillery, I've already edited the weapons ini and it works well. I used an M79 grenade as the projectile. I haven't edited the image yet but there are a few others to do as well such as grenades, the Rambo Bow and the flamer.

I smell potential in this mod. Maybe even a futuristic fan (like me) will download this.
The weapons are well shaded, modeled and coloured... so thats kwel.
Map is also very nice...

Dunno what to say more. <: /

I actually share numgun's sentiment.  I love futuristic crap, but this looks asm.
