I was exploring a cemetery the other day (purely out of curiosity about the oldest ones, the stonework, etc.) and I saw several very, very impressive gravestones.  I came upon one like an obelisk, probably about ten feet high with magnificent carvings.  At that moment, I thought, "I want to be able to do something so profound that I deserve a memorial like this."

That's my life goal, vague though it may be.  Sure, I want all the usual things - a wife and kids, a decent house, a steady job - but I also want to leave something permanent on the world, something that people will look at and see my name on.  My current outlet for that is going to be writing; I've recently had a minor fantasy of being able to go to a bookstore and pull out a novel with "By Jared Brayshaw" under the title.  Then I'd buy it, take it home and keep it on a bookshelf, and one day one of my kids would bring me the book and ask, "Is this you, Dad?" as he points to the author.  Then I'd smile and nod, and he'd run off to read it.

Or perhaps I'd earn enough money that I could fund some local building.  On campus I see things like "Rosenberg Hall," "Kern Center," "Grohman Museum," etc., and I think that it must be incredibly fulfilling to permanently have your name on a building like that.  People might forget the person, but they'll never be able to deny that he existed or that he made an impact on the world.  That's my dream: To have my family point to something and say things like "That's my grandpa" or "That's my husband."  I want to be remembered as someone who did SOMETHING, regardless of what that something was.
