My first "map"
« on: May 11, 2010, 02:22:09 pm »
It's not finished and I don't know if it will ever be but...

One question, that is really important that I have is (and I know this sounds nubbish) but how do you get new textures?

you can change the texture in: edit > map settings

if you mean download new ones that are not default, try here

about the map: seems like an inf map. you should work on it!

Make sure poly type is correct and you compiled the map?

What is the "correct poly type"?

Sorry, I am a total nub at mapping, and I freely admit that fact.

Could someone recommend a good mapping tutorial? There are so many, and I only have so much time...

At polyworks instead of using "save as" use "compile as".

Just a quick overview...

I don't know what the rules that you guys have for using scenery GFX are, but if I have taken anything that I shouldn't have please tell me.

Don't use lights, you really don't need them ... noone actually uses them

Use different colors. Only one is odd. Use the "Color Vertex" tool and change the color in the "Palette" window (if you haven't opened it, open it, it's in the "Window" options)

You can use the "Join" function of Polyworks. Select vertices that you want to stick together and press Ctrl+J

DC is right, listen to him :P

It may probably be better with a closing place, like this:

I'm a little bit bored of all those closed maps. Infiltration should have wide and opened maps. You don't even need to let the borders fade to black like I do it with almost every map I create, it's just a little trick to keep a players focus on the playground itself. If I was you I'd just imagine one point from where the light comes from. Then you know where to have bright parts and where dark parts.

And please NO ROOF! ;D

Do you see a roof?  :P  as a Tw player I detest the idea of having a "closed map" so you don't need to worry

I see. It was just a thought. I don't exactly like players bugging on my maps, so pretty much all of them have "roofs" :P

squiddy's suggestions almost turned the map in a ctf lol
remember that rotation is not the only thing that you can do with scenerys (they look a little repetitive right now)

if I were you I would close the texture and waypoints windows for now (you'll only need texture window if you are using multitexture, and the waypoints are usually made only when the map is all done)
