Making a game
« on: June 15, 2010, 02:34:32 pm »

Hi all.
I would like to start making a game I had in mind long time ago.
I would like to know who could tell me what to use and so, to start I'll make a simple and small game and then depending on how it goes I might make it bigger.

More info or you just want to let it go?

If I started learning coding today I would probably start with C# and probably XNA if I wanted to code a game. so basically get visual studio(express editions are free) and find some tutorials.

Well, if he intends to make a game that works on other platforms in addition to Windows, he might look towards learning to code in Python or Ruby and use the appropriate SDL bindings.

This might be an interesting place to start: http://www.pygame.org/

They're all lying to you. The most important part of a game is the graphics, most importantly, pixel graphics, so clearly your starting point should be MS Paint.

Or you can disregard me and listen to someone who knows what they're talking about.

Only go down this route if you want to make games that only work on Windows and Xbox 360/720.

Allright I'll try both options and check what's the easiest to start.
I don't really know how to make the 'bases' of the game yet, but I hope I'll see soon

Doing both graphics and coding alone is pain in the pride-hole. I suggest to get yourself a pal suitable for what your missing.

yes because he is certainly aiming to get his first game ever out on the wii, xbox and not to mention the ps3; don't forget the 3DS and the PSP, either, and iPhone
he probably wants to use allegro to get DOS compability, too

It depends on what you're looking for, Skykanden. C# is definitely a good way if you're willing to get your hands dirty and learn coding itself, and probably one of the better languages for beginners to in game programming.

If it's the first game you're ever making, though, I get the impression that you're moreso wanting to assume a designer role where you actually get to create a game or prototype's actual gameplay, rather than bogging yourself down in coding which can be a truly daunting task for a beginner. Maybe you should look into something like Game Maker or Multimedia Fusion 2, just to play around with things, and in an environment where the game tools are essentially given to you from the get-go? (It's how I started out!) It might not be entirely ideal if you aim to become a programmer, but even so, it should give you a basic understanding of the more abstract concepts of what makes a game tick (objects, sprites, basic scripting, etc).

Beyond everything else, have fun doing it, whatever you choose!

I didn't realize Skykanden was an actual developer and his target market included consoles

GameMaker really is a good start and of course you can create bigger game with it. but overall it HARRD to create even Small §d games... so maybe you try to crete the best you can do out of 2d games? :)

you can allways send me a message according to game maker and/or game creation at all. sure i can help often.
