I get asked fairly often by some of the linux/computer/server enthusiasts here if I have any pictures of my servers in Chicago that run all of this stuff.  I have been in Chicago for the past few days and one afternoon I asked my host to give me a tour of the new space that they moved everything into.  While there, I snapped a few quick pics:

Not necessarily. I don't find hardware as sexy as I find software, and I've seen servers like FLAB's all sorts of times. (not to mention I have one similar)

So from what I take it... servers consist of... a bunch of hard drives and potentially CPU's...? To me, the pictures just look like what would seem to be BUNCHES OF POOTER STUFF with a few complimentary DVD drives, added in for kicks of course.

Yep, lots of hard drives, a few cpu's per machine, lots of ram, etc. The optical drives are pretty much only used for (re)installing the operating system though.

Definitely not.. Two dual core 64 bit server AMD Opterons? 8 gigs of ram? 8 *SCSI* super fast hard drives? Lion is no less than a fucking monster of a machine.

I don't believe that's old for a server. And even if the machine is slightly dated, by todays standards, it doesn't mean anything since it is more than enough powerful to do the tasks FLAB has assigned to it.

2-3 years old isn't outdated, 15 is.   More pedantically speaking, something is really only outdated when it no longer can serve the purpose it needs to, which is very far from the case with the ones I am using currently.
