Need some help. NOW!
« on: July 24, 2010, 03:14:48 am »
Normally I would put this in the Simple Questions Thread, but it's urgent, and I know not everyone checks that thread.

I've been doing an assignment for school for the last weeks time. It's due monday. I called in sick friday, and since I had the work my group and I had been doing on my computer, I sent it to them in an e-mail(just a couple of word-documents). At the end of the day they text me saying "we're done", and that's all good. Today the files are gone. It seems they opened the document directly from the e-mail, and saved at the same directory. Is there a way to get them back?

From: July 24, 2010, 03:33:45 am
She's been using IE to open the file.. is there some sort of recent history feature in IE? I'm using firefox, which does have that, but I know nothing of IE.

So you're saying the last 8 or 9 pages we wrote is gone? If that's true, I will kill myself.

Check for the mail you sent her in the Sent outbox in your email client.
Ask her to forward the mail back to you.
Google how to recover lost files in Word.
Press Ctrl+H in her IE and browse through the history.

1. Check for the mail you sent her in the Sent outbox in your email client.
2. Ask her to forward the mail back to you.
3. Google how to recover lost files in Word.
4. Press Ctrl+H in her IE and browse through the history.

1. Check. Nothing on there except the original files I sent her.
2. Same as the above.
3. The guides only work on files that were already saved to the computer, and lost since.
4. Only shows wordfiles that have been properly saved to the computer.

Thanks though.

When you receive a word document via e-mail, you can choose either to download it onto your computer, or open it directly from the browser. Let's say you download it. You edit the file, add a few pages, whatever, and you save it. Windows will recommend you save it in the same directory as the file was opened from, which is no problem - you'll just overwrite the old file with the new, more extensive one. All well and good.

However, let's say you choose not to download it, but open it from the browser. You'd be a moron, but alas as such is my group, it would seem. When you save the document again, it will recommend some weird directory, which it seems, is impossible to find on her computer. I can find it on mine, but on hers it's gone.

Try doing an *.doc search, everywhere, hidden files/folders included, then sort by date modified.

Also, im pretty sure there is a backup in the sent/outbox folder.

When you save something via browser, I believe it saves to C:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\ . Let's hope no one has performed a disc cleanup.

Does the version of office you were working on have a recent documents section under "File"? I know 2007 or 2010 should have it. Not sure on 2003 though.
You could try looking in the hidden appdata folder C:\Users\*username*\AppData\local if your OS is Vista or 7.
If XP maybe in c:\Documents and Settings\*username*\Local Settings

Yes, but that particular document doesn't exist in there, she says.

That's what I was going for, but she says that path is empty. She may just be an ass with these things, and I'm definitely having a look on monday.

did that, and .docx as well. Nothing, she says. Again, it only shows files that were properly saved on the computer. And as for the outbox backup.. sure, I ahve one. But I can't use it, because the file that's on there is the original, that doesn't have fridays work in it.

Divide your group in 2 teams.
1- Friday's work search team
2- Saturday's work team

Wait a sec, did you just purposely put this thread offtopic? 'cause that's a warning for each of you, and a banable offence for Neo.

Oh, sorry, i didnt meant to go offtopic.
Just suggested that if you didnt find the file by now, you will have to redo the project.

I doubt that the file would be saved anywhere else except My Documents for that user (though, it might be possible that it got somehow saved on on the Admin or an another users acc My Documents folder).

Also, i tested it, by default it puts it in the My Documents folder.
