Looking for some older video games. Suggestions?
« on: August 03, 2010, 08:07:42 am »
i've always loved shooter games, especially on the xbox (classic). (since I prefer the xbox controller over keyboard/mouse) games like Halo 1/2, GTA: SA, 007 Nightfire, turok, etc. i don't feel like buying a 360 as my xbox and controllers are in perfect working order. (and the 360 controller always felt so cheapy)

i think I might buy max payne 1. Is it similar to gta: sa in terms of controls / gameplay? I think I'd like to get something similar and fun, and beatable in around a month.

The first thought that came to my mind was Iron Blood. You'd need Windows 98 to run it.

Max Payne (1&2) have a very different gameplay compared to GTA:SA in my opinion.
Max Payne is a more linear and story-heavy based game. It's the story that makes the game.
GTA:SA in the other hand is much less a linear game.
Max Payne is beatable in a week or so and isn't that challenging.
I don't know about the Xbox controls though, but they're somewhat similiar on the PC as they're both 3rd person shooters.

Max Payne controls like a shooter. Move crosshair on guy, press button to make him die. It's also worth noting that it's my favorite third person shooter series.

Sounds great. Nice rhyme too.

What about the romance parts of the game? Is it overpowering or does it add niceness?

In-game is nothing but the chaos of burning buildings and gunfire, and the plot is advanced via graphic novel. Easily skipped if you don't like them. The story segments were cheesier in Max Payne one, but I know the combat aged quite gracefully. Max Payne 2's story was better, but some believe that the gameplay was a bit easy in comparison. Both are memorable, lengthy shooters with great atmosphere and they pretty much pioneered the bullet-time mechanic that was eventually featured in every game.

I won't blame you if you use a level skip cheat on a certain hallucination stage on Max Payne 1, though.

Also, the modding community for MP1 and 2 is/was great, if you're considering getting them I'd honestly suggest PC.

I know you said you wanted shooters and that this suggestion is completely different, but if you have not played psychonauts you need to get it on steam. Its like Monkey Island was made into a platformer.

Max Payne is the only game to ever do bullettime well. It was awesome back when my friend first showed it to me when it came out and its awesome now definitely buy it.

What I would also recommend wholeheartedly is No One Lives Forever. I would rather have a NOLF sequel than Half Life 2 Episode 3, thats how much No One Lives Forever rocks.

I just love the mechanics and the weapons in Max Payne, much better than SA I think.
The bullettime is truly great too.

A mod for Half Life, The Specialists, begs to differ (:

But anywhooo, yeah, a friend showed me the first Max Paine. I'd recommend it.

I thoroughly enjoyed NOLF 2, but I never played the first one. Thanks for reminding me.

I second this, the soundtrack is orgasmic.

Metal Arms: Glitch in the System.

To date this is probably my favorite 3rd person shooter - the fact that it still doesn't have a sequel borders on criminal.

Either is fine, just preferably xbox since I haven't used it in a while and because when I got GTA: VS for PC I nearly cried since I liked the xbox version of :SA sooooooo much more.
