For me its just a choice between being against better players but having to put up with the awkwardness of IRC in gathers or the easy, pick-up'n'playness of Public servers.

I normally go on publics so I can play right there and then without having to deal with getting a + on my name, !add'ing and all the other IRC bull****. Although I might go on a gather if I'm tired of being against noobs and want some good competition.

For the publics, I don't really care what its called, as long as its got good ping and whatever amount of players I feel like playing with at the time.
