How to share files?
« on: November 01, 2010, 11:29:03 am »
I need help with networking. I have two computers:
1. My own computer
2. My sister's laptop

Both of those devices are connected to the very same Linksys WRT54G router. My question is: What do I have to do if I want to share files quickly between those two computers.

Please help me.  ???

1) Upload the files somewhere
2) Share the link
3) Download it on the other PC

I think you missed something. I want to share files quickly.

Uploading 20 gb of files considering my download/upload speed would take years.

Learn to use Google. Google is your friend. Simply by searching for "share files between 2 computers" I found this website explaining you how.

For that, DarkCrusade, I thank you!

But the thing is, I have everything checked like it was written in that article and same in the other computer as well. It seems to me that my computer just won't recognize the other one.

I will double check everything tomorrow.

I managed to transfer the files after all... I used MSN :D Sending files by using LAN connection is quite fast - 2 mb/s

I'd still like to get that problem fixed though. I won't give up easily.

What Windows version? If 7 it should be quite easy to share files with the new Homegroup-feature.

What you want to use is Windows file sharing, which every version of windows has supported since the 90s.

Essentially, right click on the folder you want to deal with, do properties, and deal with the "sharing" tab. If you don't see it, in a folder window, do tools > folder options, and in the checklist uncheck "Use simple file and folder sharing".

Then on the other machine, open a folder window (or do start > run), and type \\ipaddressofserver or \\hostnameofserver, or you can open My Network Places (called something similar in win7), go to your workgroup, and your server might/should be listed automatically.

Thanks jrgp!

It worked but not as I meant.

Let me explain more precisely

So There are some files I'd like to save on my HDD. My sister uses Windows 7 and I use windows Xp.

If I right click on the folder I want to share and select properties > sharing > toggle: Share this folder on network, then my sister can see the files I've shared in her computer but if she selects the folders she wants to share with me I can't find them on my computer.

Select folders in Windows 7 you want to share, choose "Share" from upper bar and select if you want to share it with Workgroup (read) and share it with workgroup (read and write). I selected read and write but I still cannot find it in my computer.

Could anyone actually explain how this sharing thing works on W7??

Right click on it. Properties>>sharing. Share this folder (not advanced sharing). Just tick it and it should work.

But with Windows 7 there is no such tab under Properties as "Sharing". There is only General.

Pretty sure there is.  Trying clicking on a folder rather than a file.

Only anime shows I've felt any interest in over the years are Pokemon (original TV series) and various hentai.
so clearly jgrp is a goddamn anime connoisseur. his opinion might as well be law here.

I remember something like this on my sister-in-law's new windows 7 laptop. We couldn't get the share properties of folders to show up. He isn't blind; there's a misconfiguration somewhere.

I got it fixed, jrgp was right. There was a misconfiguration.

The thing is: I had no password login enabled in windows XP that's why I couldn't see the files my sister wanted to share with me.

I had two options: Protect my XP user account with a password OR toggle "Turn password protected sharing off" in Windows 7 sharing options.

That's it I guess. Thanks for help :)
