Double Domination sub-mode (Gather + Public)

Hello there fellow soldateers!

We're happy to present you the perfected form of Double Domination sub-mode for soldat.


After lots of struggling, testing, mapmaking and organizing, this action packed soldat experience is finally brought to the masses. But for now, few facts about this mode:

>> History:

Past:
I've spotted this sub-mode around year ago, consisted of a script made by Dr.Thrax and couple maps by Hene. At that point it was impossible to do anything with it, too many bugs, too less maps. After a couple months, by accident I've found MultiMod and it's crew, among which there was Gizd ;). He rescripted the mode, and we managed to make it fully playable through some modifications. The other problem I took on my shoulders, and started creating maps for it. Along with a couple months break, we got to this point.

Present:
At this very moment, we're providing:
- 2 gather servers (available through irc, more about it below)
- 1 public server (ip: server.soldatcentral.net port: 50002)
- 12 fully playable and bugless maps (Ash, Canti, Crystal, Dreamone, Dusk, Equinox2, Frost, Hill, Irost, Phoenix, Vivid, Zajacz)
- 4 testable maps, available through gathers only (Backflip, Bricks, Chernobyl, Windmill)

Future:
After zakath gets some dev-away time and finishes one ircbot script, we'll organize a league/tournament of some sort. Script will go public then, allowing other people/projects (ie. soldatladder) to host their own servers.
At that point, our website and forum will be in preparation already.

>> Mode info:
Each map consists of 2 cruicial points, A and B. The goal is to score the most (max: 4) caps. To score, each team has to fight over both points, and capture them. To capture a point, player must simply touch once the polygon, below indicated (through scenery) area. If the team is in possession of both points at the same time, countdown starts from 10 seconds. After the counter hits 0, team which was holding the points, scores. Recapturing any of the points by opponents, stops the timer.
Capturing a point works similiar to capturing a flag, if an alive opponent is actually standing on the polygon, player cannot take possession of it.

- Game mode: ctf
- Capture limit: 4
- Time limit: 10
- Friendly fire: on
- Bonuses: Cluster Grenades, Bulletproof Vest, Predator, Berserker
- Bonus frequency: 2

Hmmm, the whole "Touching the polygon" principle will definitely encourage camping, if not make it necessary.
Any alternates to that? :/

Edit: Points are mostly in open area's, staying at one spot is a suicide.

Well your not exactly going to leave the spot defenceless are you??? That is pretty much the point of this gamemode: capturing the point and holding it... camping really isn't an issue and its just part of the game anyhows.

Anyhows like ichiro says you need to play it before commenting, its really fun.

I don't doubt it's fun, the principle itself is amusing, but I'm just saying that the aspect of camping will be a turn off for many people...

Sigh I'm in no mood for any pointless arguing, just go try it out, you'll see how wrong you are. Because there is no camping, there is no time for it, there's just so much action. If you stay at one spot, you'll be an easy target.

On most of the maps, there's either more than 1 way to get into a point, or the area around is very wide. Go check the maps, some of them are harder to defend but easier to attack, some are the other way around. At some maps, one point is a slaughterhouse, while the other one requires a tactical approach. It's all made like that, to get a different feeling from each one of them, and harvest the most out of this mod's possibilities.

I can't really make a point here, or put some reason in your head, if you havn't even scouted the thing.
Oh and btw, it's not called camping, if people know exactly where you might be, that's just plain stupidity.

Tried it all yesterday, and it only proved me right, and no, you don't have to be in hiding to be considered a camper.
Air-Camping doesn't involve hiding for instance.

And if you don't have at least 2 good campers at any spot, you can't hold it, the maps are too open for that.

Aaaand, I don't argue, I discuss.

I'm just wondering, are we really playing the same mod. You say 'maps' in general eventhough I'm sure you've played maybe 2 or 3 of them. There are few maps that are very open and Imo bad DOM (double domination) maps where the capture area is made too challenging to hold. However in most maps the issue is handled well and teams get caps. Maps are also different to each other in general.

In any case this game mod is great. At least in ctf competitive community, it was very good welcomed, it's a bit like ctf but enough different to it. It's also matching into cw play as good as ctf and better than any other gamemode.

This is the best thing that's been introtuced to the community in a while, hopefully it gains more players to become something else than the just-another-flop gather.

And no, camping is not a problem. At least it doesn't seem to bother people as they keep playing, just deal with it.

Well, you've only seen the 'trailer', and I don't see how you can make a fair and objective judgement by that. The main purpose of our public server, is to get people interested from the other part of soldat community, since irc one has always been limited. No more than that.

The mod is prepared in such way, that only by playing a 4on4 game (for most of the maps), you can get the full experience it provides. And I must say I've never heard any complaining about your so-called "Air Camping". However the reason might be, that mainly ctf players tried it out. And ctf maps doesn't differ that much in this case. If there is a thing called "Air Camping", then it has always been present in ctf gaming, as "height advantage".
