Just curious thoughOn a more serious note, how's it like to have a cat for a pet? I am thinking of the possibility of getting a pet in my later years.

They have simple needs (food/water readily available; possibly scratching toys when they're young), they're hyper (run around and jump) when they're young, they're smart about certain things and are really cool to watch, since they move extremelyy fast without making a sound and can see in the dark.  They're extremely self sufficient and can fend for themselves. If you're going on vacation for a few days, just leave enough good and water available and they won't even notice you're gone. If they're indoor/outdoor you'll occasionally find them leaving dead birds on your doorstep and other nice presents.

They also become more and more unobtrusive and statue-like as they age, as you can see in my pic.

In essence, they're extremely different from dogs and you need to do careful research if you're considering one. They're not as affectionate and look at humans differently. Dogs only care about pleasing their masters; cats are extremely self centered. As the saying goes, dogs look up to you; cats look down to you. As I've read, the reason cats can live in the wild without human intervension and totally take care of themselves is because they're not fully domesticated, unlike most breeds of dogs (various snow shepherds and ferol dogs who live in abandoned cities are almost as independent).

And that's why I prefer cats. I would post a photo of mine pet called "Desperado" but unfortunatelly I don't have any.

Yeah, and they have some really interesting personality traits:
 - when they're pissed at you, they literally turn their backs to you and stare in the opposite direction
 - when they're pissed they wag their tail
 - when they're pleased to see you, they rub up against you
 - their reaction times are fast as hell. Just move your hand around in front of them and watch them move their heads/eyes around in amazement and curiosity
 - they are able to hide in random places in your house/lair. If they don't want to be found, they won't, but they'll be watching you at all times
 - they'll knock things over deliberately to get your attention if you're ignoring them

The most entertaining thing about my cat is when it literally goes bonkers and dashes behind the sofa just to appear on the other side, run to the other side again and squashes through again for 5 minutes.

Cat's are treacherous, one minute they're purring like cute little fluff bags, the next they have a claw buried a couple of cm's in your cheek/chest/hand.

Unless you have declawed our cats (bad idea anyway), cats should have scratching toys their whole lives, not just when they're kittens, particularly if they're indoor cats.  It is needed for them to properly molt the outer layers of their claws so they stay sharp and grow properly (just like you wouldn't tell someone to stop clipping their fingernails when they are 10 years old or something).

1st aww <3 2nd Was there a lan party one day before that pic? 3rd He/She is begging you to scratch it. The rest: That black cat reminds so lot our old cat, who ran away, and took my heart with it.     Dunno why it leaved. (But it came back once, it caught one wiener and then, disappeared forever)

Yeah I really don't agree with declawing cats; I consider taking away an animal's natural defenses and climbing tool to be extremely cruel.

For some reason my cat hasn't had any interest in clawing/scratching anything for years. She went pretty nuts when she was younger though.

No, I was just in the process of moving into this apartment still.  Though that part of my apartment is usually littered in computer equipment.

Here's a pic I took a couple hours ago - I had JUST put those routers down.  I put them down, turned my back for literally 5 seconds (working from home today, took them out of my car to do some work here), and Desi jumped up on top of them then looked up at me like "what? these are mine.  no you can't have them back."

Cats are cool when they're young. They are active, adore playing with simple toys like shoestrings (Yeah, it's a cat, so hunt long, black worms is cool!), laser lanterns (don't aim for the eyes!), balls and etc.

The people talking mostly about how cats are cool when they're young are representative of why there are so many dogs and cats abandoned once they grow out of the young/cute phase.  I adopted one of my cats (the black one) from a shelter and the other from some college students who couldn't take care of her anymore.
