I'd love to have a cat, but my mother hates them so no dice. When I get my own place its straight to the pet shop though :3

Adopt from a shelter, adoption group, ASPCA (or craigslist even), don't go to a pet store.  There are thousands of cats, dogs and other pets waiting for a home because they were stray or belonged to someone that can't or won't take care of them anymore.

Buying pets from pet stores just encourages overbreeding of cats/dogs as pet stores prey on peoples' "ooh look at the cute kitten|dog" reaction.  Some of these cats and dogs come from puppy/kitten mills which churn them out in inhumane and unsanitary conditions just to turn a larger profit.

I adopted Joey (the gray one above) from some girls on craigslist who needed to move and couldn't take care of her anymore.  Desi (black one above) came from a shelter and is the most awesome and friendly cat I've ever met.

I Agree.
You don't  need to buy a pet when there are a lot of abandoned ones looking for a home.

Tip: A cat that was abandoned/mistreated will be more loyal and loving to whoever adopted it (And takes good care of it) than a cat bought at a pet store.

But NEVER feed stranger´´ kitty, if you don't meet it almost dead lying somewhere. I think our cat ran away, because someone was feeding it. I really hate those people who spot a cat walking on a road, and start: ``Oh, oh, ooh, look at how cute cat!! Come here, little baby, mommy gives to you a weenie!´´
