So I've been trying to get into *nix operating systems. I'm taking a Unix Systems Administration course and using Centos. Thing is, I want a distribution I could use to almost replace Windows and at the same time practice setting up servers and messing with networking. Centos is just ... ... boring?
Any recommended distros?
Pros cons?

Centos/redhat/fedora have more/better guis than ubuntu/debian for managing core parts of the system, so you should probably try fedora if you're not comfy with the linux cli yet. Opensuse is also jam packed with great guis.

Personally however, I use a combination of ubuntu/debian/freebsd on my machines, out of pure preference.

I'm trying out Fedora on VBox. Good stuff. I have a dual boot of ubuntu on my laptop, but I just don't find it very comfortable to use.

You pulled the troll card on Gamer for basically saying that Ubuntu does some things better, and Windows does other things better. Now what does ISPs running Linux have to do with it? That's a very specific use. And what ISPs run all their megabits through a desktop distro like Ubuntu?

For server purpose i recommend Gentoo linux, unless you're a hardcore admin, then try LFS

Maintenance hell. How is that good for any server? If you want minimalism, use Arch. Never tried? Your loss.

Linux just outright sucks. I've been using it for almost 5 years now(Of which almost 3 I've spent with Arch) and man have I had tons of problems. If I didn't have time or interest to actually take a look and solve these little problems, I'd be gladly using Windows because it just works better. One thing in which Linux (and pretty much all of the Unix-like OS'es) is superior to Windows is the command line prompt. Naysayers haven't used it. It just is so much easier to do things like "ps -A | grep opera" than to do ctrl+alt+del, click on "Show Task Manager", click on "Processes" tab and try to figure out if there's an instance of Opera running or not.. ..from a list of +40 processes.

Oh, and programming is so much more enjoyable on any Unix-like OS than on Windows. Thanks to the command line again. It's just so much easier to write stuff than to click around fancy wizards and huge jungle of forms just to set compiler flags and link against debug libraries.

Ubuntu is pretty good in my opinion, stuck with it after trying suse, mandriva, gentoo, and pclinuxos. For lightweight try puppy linux. I installed it on my gf's computer no hassles and is fast as hell, and I think you can now use ubuntu packages with it although I have yet to try. Using ubuntu as a test lamp server in the background was a breeze to set up, although I can't imagine it being to tough with any decent distro. It's package management is superb, and on my second workstation. I use virtualbox to load windows taskbar right above the normal one, making it a use anything system really(I play around a little with flash and when I get better parts will be virtualizing Soldat). I highly recommend setting up a virtual server on your computer to run your webserver for the experience.

Ease of use is based on familiarity.  If you're comfortable with Windows, it's just as good.

It just depend on what you like. I like Gentoo because i can configure almost everything. All packages are not binaries but source codes compiled on my own pc, what allows to compile every package precisely for my CPU, with modules and flags i need.
Maintenace? after configuring everything (OK, this can take some time), the only thing i must do is to launch update from time to time. Also, if you have X server installed there are tons of wizards ready to help.

The only thing that is bad in gentoo is that it seems to be created in the image and likeness of the world: It's installation and configuration process takes ~7 days...

But after that, it works like a charm.

Obviously if you want a linux that is easy to use, and just don't ask for everything then i don't recommend gentoo. Then i think that Open SuSE or (K)Ubuntu is a good choice.

Oh, also, for distro that will be best to replace the windows OS i recommend FreeSpire. Never used it personally, but heard a lot about it.
