In your profile settings there's a checkbox called "show my online status to others" or something similar.

Checked the profile prior to posting and couldn't find any such setting. Care to be a bit more specific?

I found the option that lets us enable normal users to hide their online status.

Who thinks I should enable it?

Shouldn't to everyone.
I'd agree for people above 1000 posts, or have special status (such as 'Soldat Beta Team' like 12th_Account has).

The setting isn't that specific.

And I don't really find that fair anyway. What about the mature veterans who live in the lounge with under 200 posts?

As for the member rank/position thing.. eh.. idk. But the option for that isn't there regardless.

Despite what I said before - allow it to everyone. Only people interested in hiding will enable that option.

Sometimes people want to just "lurk", besides, admins will still be able to check activity if needed.

Who needs signatures, personal text under the avatar and ASCII smilies converted to images?

I always hide my online status on forums that provide that feature. This way people can't judge me based on what they see me read and how long it takes me to type a response. They can all see what I'm up to and it makes me feel exposed and ashamed. This is why people are making multiple accounts - because the previous ones become unclean after all the judgement.

you can lurk as a guest

Logging out to view threads and then in again to post is very non-user friendly.

Use multiple browsers, eg Firefox and Chrome, at the same time. One logged in and one not.

It's a means of expressing yourself. Being hidden is not.

Exactly! I want to NOT express myself. At least you get me.

I don't like doing things that are different.

If they judge you based on something so insignificant - they're not the kind of people whose opinion should matter to you or anybody else.
