My Network.
« on: March 29, 2011, 02:18:18 pm »
I'm always having problems with my internet and home network. I'm sure it's a single issue causing multiple symptoms. I'm tired of searching for solutions all over the internet. So instead I'm posting all my info and any problems that come up here. If you can help please do.

So first this is all my equipment and their topology.

Problem #1 Solved on x/x/xx

The modem is new and I set it up with my ISP but now I keep getting a NAT 3 on my PS3. (I don't know how to check NAT on a PC but I think they will all have NAT 3s too.) Since then out of game Voice/Video chat's speed/quality oscillate and it's impossible to communicate. I don't think it has anything to do with the modem though, I think it's the router. I did some port forwarding for the ps3 with no luck and also did dmz , nothing worked. Since then I've removed all forwarded ports.

"NAT 3" ?

yeeees, and UPnP is unavailable. Don't really care about that because I don't know what it is xD. The NAT3 is not messing up chats or games with dedicated servers anymore; it used to back when this stated about 2 months ago.

Is the speed still ass when you connect the modem straight to a computer with an Ethernet cable? What's the speed when you connect the router to a computer with the cable? And what's the advertised speed?

For the "NAT 3" PS3 issue, test if any of these solutions work for you:

If I'm remembering correctly, NAT3 is PS3's way of saying you're behind a NAT, and perhaps one where no ports appear to be forwarded and/or upnp doesn't work.

Is your wireless access point doing NAT as well?  If you're going through two NATs then UPNP is never going to work to open ports, because it can't talk to the front router.  You should be using the internal one as a switch/access point only - not for a second layer of NAT.  this can hurt your Internet performance as well.

connect the modem straight to a computer with an Ethernet cable I get the same speed.  Advertised speed is about 6MB Download and 0.50 MB Upload. thanks for the link I'll let you know if it helps.

EDIT: The only suggestion that I hadn't tried was to disable UPnP on my ps3 and it did nothing. I checked and UPnP is enable. I'm changing my settings on my ps3 back, setting UPnP enabled. Oh, and today UPnP IS available it was not before for some reason.

@FliesLikeABrick  I'm sorry but I don't understand your last post at all.

Do you know what NAT means?

Some kind of magic pixie that makes the internet work.... it's a protocol that helps route packets sent though a router or any thing else that routes data. Should I look it up on google anyway or did I get it right?

Ok so from your last post: Is your wireless access point doing NAT as well? Most likely, I looked around its settings and I didn't find anything that could tell me if it was.

Does your wireless access point have one port that says "Internet" or "WAN", and then 4 other ones?

If so, which port is plugged into the rest of your network?

NAT sucks.  It is basically necessary for residential use of the Internet on IPv4.  What it does is allows multiple computers to use one public IPv4 address on the Internet.  But what this means is that without manual port forwarding, inbound connections can't work - think about it this way: if a connection was coming in (for a game or something), how would the router know which computer it needs to go to?  The short answer is "it can't".

upnp is a protocol that allows applications and devices to contact your router and request that a port forward be set up.  However this is unreliable, and additionally it *can't* work when you have two separate routers doing NAT, one behind the other - because the device/application might be able to get it forwarded in the closer router, but it can't talk to the outer one to get it forwarded correctly.

If your wireless access point is doing NAT, I might be able to talk you through setting it up more as just an access point, not a router.  This should be able to get you down to NAT2 or NAT1 (or whatever the PS3 calls it), since the PS3 will then be able to do upnp with your one remaining router.

That makes complete sense. I understand now. Thank you. The ports in the back of the router? Look at this.

[  1  ]    [  2  ]    [  3  ]    [  4  ]    [  Internet  ]     [  Usb  ]
PC      Printer    Secret   Nothing      Modem         Nothing

How would you like to go about talking me though setting up an access point? I do have remote Remote Management set up and my IP changes so I would not mind giving it to you. But I think this will work better. This is an emulator for my router, just let me know what I have to set up. http://support.dlink.com/emulators/dir655/121/Wizard_Wireless.html

Thanks again.

It's Internet IP address?... umm   192.168.1.64? It's either that or 75.3.149.XXX I'll PM you the full IP.

Oh, and that 2nd IP is dynamic so it will change.

Ok, so you don't have double NAT going on.
