Most of these outages have been due to transient problems encountered during the move of my servers from one colo facility to a better one (better support, better network, real IPv6 connectivity, etc). These problems should go away completely within the next few weeks as I finish moving things around between servers and physical locations.

However the 8 hour outage this morning (Eastern US time) was due to a network outage at my new colo provider. I am working to get an explanation from them of what the outage was and why it took so long for them to act on it.

Well, it'd be indeed quite nice if 1/3 of the time these wouldn't be down..

Damn man, I don't "favorite" servers because it gets messy in a shit-fest pace, a few weeks of lobby time-outs and forums being unavailable?
Any way you can avoid it?

I'm doing the best I can. I'm in the process of moving my 3 physical servers from Chicago to a new location closer by. The only way to avoid complete downtime of 5-10 days per server is to keep two online at any given time while the 3rd is being shipped, reinstalled, and put into the new location. Then I take all of the stuff from the one that is offline and put it on the other two. This means a lot of time moving things around, lots of details that I either skip or forget about, and downtime as things get moved around. On top of that, my new provider just happened to have a large network outage this morning, which is just shitty timing.

I'm really sorry for the downtime, but hopefully the past 2-3 years of everything being rock solid makes up for it, and I should be even more rock solid once everything is in the new location.

Need I remind those of you who have been around long enough how broken and unstable the sites and forums used to be back in the speedball/styx days?

After this morning's outage I believe to have found and fixed a problem responsible for some of the downtime.

I will be taking the server down about 5-6 hours from now (use the post timestamp to figure it out for your timezone) to add more RAM to help with the additional load being incurred on this server.

It should be down for no more than 10 minutes.

So far the server has been stable since I fixed something yesterday morning. I didn't go to the DC yet but should within the next few days.

still on the move - the slowness within the past 12-18 hours was due to the proxy server on my side shitting the bed - it's something that'll go away when the move is completely done.

Kinda surprises me anyone noticed these forums were down/slow since they are hardly used anymore. That's the main reason I clicked on this topic anyway.

Talking about downtime, even not rapidity related, the forums are "down" in a way.

EDIT: I just attempted to edit my message and it took "0.123 seconds with 16 queries.". I personally didn't count in real but it approximativly took 10 seconds, more or less.

generating the page on the server and loading it to your computer through the intertubes are different things

The forums get slow every year around this time, when people are getting out of school and/or traveling with their family or just enjoying the nice weather.
