How did Ubuntu become so popular?
« on: August 16, 2006, 07:52:13 pm »
It seems like many people on these forums use Ubuntu.

And I mysel use Kubuntu but manly because
I could get free cds from (because internet too slow/cheapskate)
https://shipit.kubuntu.org/
https://shipit.ubuntu.com/

And just wondering how a 1 1/2?? year old Distro becomes so popular and overtakes much older distros.

Reasons I can think of and remember reading from somewhere:
  • Free shipping of Cd's
  • Increased security feature
  • Small Size (1CD)
  • No overload of programs doing same job

After using Kubuntu, (Ubuntu has similar programs)
I just wanna say these programs rock
  • Adept Manager - awesome tool
  • Konqueror Web Browser

People that have any idea or comments why Ubuntu has become such a popular Distro would you please post.

Because it is easy for a new linux user to use, comes with programs already on windows(or should be):Gimp, Firefox. Gnome is a simple but powerful window manager, ubuntu uses apt-get and is debian which makes everything easier. Comes with synaptic, and ubuntu has support for a lot of hardware, also it has a 10 million dollar donation from some south afican dude which makes everything easier to do since the leaders of ubuntu have some money for all the work they put in.

You ask why it is so popular, yet you apparently understand/realize why ;)

I use it because it has a friendly install process, active development, recent programs, and it supports so many things on the desktop, laptop, server... and anything else.  I never find myself wishing I was on windows, and Ubuntu provides all of the tools I need/can use to optimize my development and spend my time well.

Because it's automatically cool if you pretend to use Linux, and nobody will doubt you if you say you use Ubuntu because it's easy to set up.

The only reason I use linux (live cd though) is because I have codecs problems on windows, so watching movies (porn ;p ) is impossible, thus with the live cd I can browse for porn safer and I can watch it too :D

I decided to remove my signature, since jrgp was picking on me by sending me annoying PM's. - Chrono, Wednesday July 27, 2007

Kubuntu is Ubuntu, but with a KDE interface by default (instead of GNOME)

There are also Xubuntu (xfce instead of gnome) and nubuntu (security oriented, I forget what interface/window manager)

it's just the latest fad... like del.icio.us and digg was a couple of years ago...
currently using xubuntu jsut cause it loads about 90secs faster than my f****g windows xp >_<.. If it wasnt for soldat i wouldnt even boot windows again.
Reasons for its success: target group of net-savvy 20-somethings, politically correct promotion (see the multi-culti userlogo - dont have a link right now) , and last but not least user friendly as anything you'll find. With some tweaking (cause it's shipped with a bit of bloat) you can make it even faster/right for you. Thumbs up etc. :D

... so what makes you call it a fad?  "fad" means it is a temporary interest that will die off in the near future, but nothing you said backed up your statement about it being a fad
