Should border polygons being stretched far beyond the edge of a map for visual effect be allowed as an established mapping standard?

It should never be allowed
It should be allowed under certain circumstances
All maps should have this

Society for Soldat Mapping
« on: August 18, 2006, 06:19:56 am »
Hello,

I started a Soldat Mapping Bible project a long time ago, the aim of which was to document every facet of Soldat mapping from scenery making to waypointing. I picked up the project again a few days ago, but I cannot do it alone. I need input from the community on how it should manifest itself in the end.

I need people who are interested in this to write a few odd things for it and otherwise help me out in other stuff. In particular, people who know stuff about Polyworks, because I am old-fashioned. Please contact me at ericstemporaryaddress [at] hotmail [dot] com if you want to help. Together, we will form the Society for Soldat Mapping.

For the rest of you, I have a poll question. I want to establish a set of standards which people can checklist off during the map making progress to see if the their map complies with the Society's standards. We will work to promote interest in maps which comply with the mapping standards. I am not going to create the standards alone, because people will think that I am a jerk.

Anyway, the poll is yours.

it's a hard thing to work this out because people will mostly not follow the guidlines of such a society. a progress like this takes time to evolve. if you want to set new standards and guidelines you should rather do this by making map with these standards and ask some other people to adopt them, and then after a while if people recognize this "new" trend in every 3rd overview of a map everyone will tend to do it imo.

I haven't quite settled on a plan of action yet. If this is actually going to have an affect on the community, then it will need to do a lot of work to make the members of the community aware of it. I hope to make it have a strong community presence.

If people are going to become interested in this, then it will have to do a regular service to the community rather than sit idly by on some random website. I'm thinking about doing weekly reports and posting them in the forums. The reports would contain reviews of maps, scenery, textures and other such things. A fair bit of work on my behalf, but I am prepared to do it.

Of course, it will take time for the community to accept this.

I don't usually streth my polygons far out to make such an effect, and in my opinion the map still looks good.

You could add this to your page, but keep in mind there are other ways it can be done, nobody should have to comply with that ideal.

EDIT: and a map of the week thread would kick ass.

It depends on the map. Mappers like Boxo can make great aesthetic effects from an overview through polygonal placement with no effect on gameplay whatsoever, but others such as Demonic surround their maps in blank.BMPs of darkness. :P I really don't care.

And I'm managing the waypoint section! xD

lol, a Bible, eh?

something like:

Our Father, who art in Poland,

Hallowed be thy Game.

Thine enemies come.

Thy shall be pwning,

On single player as it is online.

Give us this server our infinte ammunition.

And forgive us our infiltrations,

As we forgive those who captured our flag.

And lead us not into M79-ing,

But deliver us from noobism.

For thine is the server,

and the admin,

and the score,

for ever and ever.

Amen.

If someone wants to surround their maps, they should use scenery instead of polygons. It's lighter on your computer.
