Yeh, skipped over the first few posts.
Is your save unmodded? I tried loading it and it says that its missing the Carpman char.
Last year, I dreamt I was pissing at a restroom, but I missed the urinal and my penis exploded.

Wow, completely forgot about Carpman. I modded this guy in about a year ago. I actually have a world save with a bunch of those guys in a river, though I have yet to find out how terrifying they can be.

(Double post  :( )

Lots of stuff to do in early spring! Such as...

1) Replant plump helmets
2) Plant sweet pods and quarry bushes (gotta use all the seeds!)
3) Worry about the stock of drinks

About that last part, I've set one of the peasants to be a bookkeeper in my stead. She sets to work making all stockpile records of our food and drinks as accurate as possible.

And in no time at all, becomes a clerk, given the amount of work she has to do.

Of course, 'Fryer' Smithsear, one of the 7 original settlers with the metalsmithing skill, wanted a dog. So I gave him a pet dog, and he adopted it immediatedly.

Meanwhile...

.

Elven caravan arrived in spring.

This is the entire caravan. Seriously. No elven diplomat either.

They come to the trading depot and unload whatever stuff they have. I go up aboveground and get blasted by a wall of freezing air. I make my way over to the depot and check their stuff. I see they only have three wood logs and a bunch of cloth.

I trade their three pieces of wood for a bunch of water and nothing else. Have fun with the water, I guess. The "T" to the right of the item names means I'm trading my frozen water for their wood at a very small profit for the elves.

Going over our stocks, we seem to be pretty good on food and drinks, actually. Thinking about putting up some more farms for more plant/drink output in the near future.

And just as I was going over the stocks, about 20 migrants arrive. Armok help us all.

In the wake of migrants, we get a couple of newcomers with unique names. They are 'Sukie' Webtour, the third engraver, and 'Samuli' Wheelsreign, the cheesemaker.

The rest of the migrants as listed are:
2 engravers
1 mason
1 trapper
1 weaponsmith
2 blacksmiths
1 metalcrafter
1 gem setter
1 leatherworker
1 craftsdwarves
2 fish cleaners
1 herbalist
1 lye maker
1 wood burner
and 4 more peasants

Early summer in Cudgelmuscles

We are officially out of wood. Predictably, the pointy-eared people's load of three wood logs clearly did not help much.

The rest of the dwarves with no beds assigned to them will have to sleep on the floor

And you know, just when I was thinking that the very uninspiring landscape of the glacier fortress wasn't inspiring dwarves to build something cool, we get this:

Later claims a Craftsdwarf workshop, gathers 3 rainbow trout bones, and 1 shale rock, and begins construction:

Perhaps the cold has seeped into his brain and gave him illusions of grandeur. Completing this artifact under the Bone carving skill catapults his skill level in Bone carving to Legendary.

Description of artifact:

Worth 6,000 dwarfbucks. A typical artifact that also isn't worth much.

hold on am i a dude or what

you're a woman, panz
I could always change the gender with some third-party program, but I think what could happen afterwards will be even more disturbing

also, I'm on the second year, so if you really want to have a turn, you can take the third year

Well, we have a clerk, but no nobles or anything else like that. Not enough dwarves

oh and it's really up to jrgp if he wants to be dwarfed or not.

Seeing as we have several peasants waiting around for a job to do, I draft them into the military instead, and they get into the designated barracks and start wrasslin' right away. In a very short amount of time, they become wrestlers, then Elite Wrestlers, then Champions. All six of them. Legendary skill in wrestling.

I had a bash pit dug out, but when I collapsed the whole thing from the surface to several z-levels below, most of the water splashed back up and refroze into ice walls. In the wake of the collapsing ice, I managed to get enough water to flood a small farm field, and enough for a well to be built in case any of the dwarves get wounded; Bed-ridden dwarves drink only water.

In the process of digging out a small farm to flood all that 6-7 water on.

We irrigate a much smaller part of the field than was speculated, but we did get a well up and working.

At around early autumn, the dwarven caravan arrives! Our heroes!

They have brought plenty of wood, more than enough to build the remaining beds for the bed-less residents of Cudgelmuscles

They also bring us food and drinks. While our fort is almost pretty much self-sufficient except for the wood supply, you can never have enough of food and drinks. Just better make sure you have room for all of them, or else the food'll rot later.

And while I was directing the dwarves to fill our stockpiles of the stuff that we need, out of nowhere a skeletal polar bear appears on the horizon!..and while our military is down below training, there was no need for them. The dwarven guards that accompanied the caravan dispatches the polar bear with no problem. I admire the bones and skull it left behind, and decide to save them for later.

In the midst of all the trading and polar bearin', a gem setter gets into a mood

He rushes off to claim a Jeweler's workshop, and I leave him to gather whatever materials he needs and go check over our stocks.

We have a ridiculous amount of food and drinks, more than enough to feed our current population of 37 dwarves.

Feeling VERY optimistic about our stockpiles, I walk past the workshop area back to my room and spot the gem setter just sitting there, drawing on a piece of paper..

Curiousity piqued, I take a closer look at his workshop, and he hasn't gathered anything yet. He's just sitting there sketching something on the piece of paper furiously. I stealthily look over his shoulder and take a look at what he's been sketching:

He needed rough gems. While we do have gems, they were all already cut.

Thinking where to start digging for uncut gems, I remembered that veins of bauxite sometimes contained either rubies or sapphire, and start digging into a vein that was uncovered during the making of the staircases.

Seconds later, we strike ruby.

The gem setter runs down the stairs and grabs one uncut ruby before anyone else can gather them, and rushes back to the workshop and begins construction.

While the gem setter is busy making something, more migrants arrive in mid-autumn. By the gods! How many of these poor saps thought this was a great place to settle in?

8 migrants arrive at our fortress, bringing our current population up to 45. The most notable of this wave of new dwarves are a new miner, trapper, and another mason/engraver.

I immediatedly start digging out some new rooms and order some new beds for the new -guests-

While assigning some beds to the migrants, I see that there's a married couple from the migrant wave. Good. That's one less bed to make.

After all was said and done, the gem setter threw his tools down on the table with a bang, stood up on his chair and held up high the second artifact of this fortress:

Hmm.

Hmmmmm...
Worth 90,000 dwarfbucks

And thus ends autumn, and the beginning of winter.

@blacksheep - lolwut

Early winter:

I decide to dig out a couple of new rooms one floor underneath the burial chambers, for the food and drinks, since the possibility of running out of room is very real.

Here is a screenshot of the new miner digging out some tiles, while both Espadon and I, legendary miners, are literally digging fucking circles around him.

So yeah, other than just moving stockpiles around and digging new rooms, and smoothing out the dining room and bedroom chambers, not a whole lot has been happeni

Why hello thief. Perhaps you have come to this fortress through a fucking huge expanse of glaciers just to see what you could take?

Upon being discovered that his sneaking down through the stairs full of busy dwarves wasn't the best idea ever, he turns around and bolts out of the fortress aboveground, and...

Just as he was reaching for the doorknob, two champions catch up with him and mauls him to near-instantaneous death.

And shortly after the death of the first kobold thief, another one appears

He too, tries to run away, but the wrestling champions are too quick for him..

They stomp on his left foot, crushing it, and then picks him up and smashes him against a wall, killing him. I then order their corpses thrown into the refuse stockpiles and their clothes and daggers looted for selling later.

And at the end of winter, someone organizes a party in the dining hall.

And thus ends my second year ruling this fortress

Here's the current list of dwarves at the end of year 2:

Attached to this post is the save of the end of year 2 in Cudgelmuscle, and the creature file needed to get the save working (sorry for the accidental mod)

Well, in explanation, I had 1 legendary item (Urmeshlemal) in my first fortress, which got overrun by angry elves.. mass woodcutting had an undesirable effect, who knew? I went to reclaim the fortress some time later because the area was desirable, and, lo-and-behold, Urmeshlemal! In essence, I recover it, traders come, I sell it (or so I think), one season later, more traders and.. phatty legendary item in my trading screen. Apparently they take one look at it, and.. give it back

Keeps happening. Been going on several years now

Gah, i just cant get on with 40d.
Ill play on DF2010.

Started on an untamed wilds glacier partially mixed with some tundra with an aquifier, as i couldnt find a terrifying one without being salt watered.
I completely forgot how to prepare for a glacier, so im still digging the basic layout with 2 miners, while the rest is freezing on the starting wagon since the beginning. Its mid summer, and stocks of everything are low.
Fun is imminent.

edit:
Seems that my digging site attracted 6 migrants. Note that the current state is like that ive started playing and left it running.

edit2:
Abandoned the fortress. Made it to winter, amazingly with only one death.
Oh god, i got addicted again. Makes me want to reclaim it the same moment.

Quick thoughts?

The glacier fort failed epically. 3 times, mispicked a little bit, so i ended up without any wood or water.
This one is 3/4ths aquifier, but only on the upper part, while everything below is in a mountain. Made it to year one.

Its just the start. Im going to do this on the long entrance corridor:

I didnt manage to finish that one yet. Mostly because i experienced Fun(tm) related to booze and tantrum.

So, lots of bridges.

From: September 17, 2011, 12:54:28 pm
Ditto.

Still have to add 1-line bridges in between.
Currently @ year 3, population 44, still no anvil, slowly prospering.
Doing preparations for the next migrant wave to become soldiers.
Lost one dwarft due to fey mood and lack of a smithy.
