To Ubuntu Users.

How do you like Unity so far? I think it blows. And Gnome 3 is even worse. I've been hearing good things about KDE "Plasma" but the last time I used KDE it was pretty buggy, anyone have any experience with it?

I don't use Ubuntu personally, but we have it on a test machine where I work. From passing glances it looks exactly the same as it always did. What don't you like specifically?

Unity and Gnome 3 are both *extremely* very radical desktop changes.

I primarily use Linux and FreeBSD myself (Ubuntu on my laptop; Debian on my desktop; FreeBSD on my servers/ancient laptops, plus FLAB's servers that I help manage run Ubuntu; and at work I help maintain/fix some 2 thousand plus CentOS boxes).

If I want a really lightweight fast desktop environment I just go with Fluxbox. I run Debian Sid so I have access to Gnome 3 on my desktop and it's certainly fun to use. I'm not totally used to it yet so I'm not as fast when it comes to moving between windows, but the majority of my work is in a screen session in a konsole tab anyway so the desktop environment becomes irrelevant at that point.

I have noticed however that gnome 3 resumes from standby faster than unity, and that's enough for me to like it more.

I used KDE as my desktop environment for roughly a year straight through. It's very fun and pleasurable to look at, and not slow as long as your computer was made within the past 5 years (no joke) and doesn't have a shitty graphics card.

My girlfriend just installed Ubuntu Oneiric (11.10) on her desktop now that we have it set up after moving.  I quite like the many small improvements they have made to Unity in this release.  I look forward to seeing what they do in the next LTS release, since that's when the developers really tend to tie it all together into an incredibly strong release. 

A lot of people have bitched about the move to Unity, but I knew all along that the first release would be a bit rough only to be followed by improvements leading up to a rock solid LTS.  It's something I've liked about Ubuntu's release cycle - they added LTS releases back in 2006 and then used intermediate releases to add bold new features and improvements (Upstart was the first example of this) which become solid by the time the next LTS release comes out.

I use KDE since i remember. I've never liked gnome's design, though i confess that never tried GNOME 3, perhaps it's time.

I had to switch over to Gnome when KDE 4.0 was released. I had to switch back to KDE when Gnome 3.0 was released. If only there was a working, modern desktop environment which wasn't Xfce(because it's buggy) or LXDE(Because it's buggy, awkward and looks awful).

Always falling back to Fluxbox though when needed. ..and of what I've heard, people are better off using Mint than Ubuntu, thanks to Unity. The only reason not to use Mint instead of Ubuntu is that.. it's not Ubuntu. Makes sense, huh?

I've been playing around with KDE and it looks a lot better than I remembered. I'm just having issues shutting down and restarting through the GUI so I gotta go through terminal . Some buttons just don't respond at all.
