Soldat ... pathetic author.
« on: October 19, 2011, 03:06:05 am »
Buying the game just to change resolution is extortion, I have never seen such a feature PURPOSELY made un-available to the community in any game.

I've said it already, but...
Resolution change is such a basic thing as sound in game. A new potential player opens Soldat on his 26" monitor and sees some big, stretched and blurred shit, he simply quits the game. Soldat was made in 2002, it's now 2011 and default resolution is still 640:480.
All resolutions should be enabled for everyone, let all useless features like colorful flames and other stuff for reg only. Trying to get cash from registration is ok as long as it doesn't harm the game.

The thing is that the resolution change has little effect to your game other than making the interface smaller the larger resolution you take. Soldat doesn't offer higher resolution textures or scenery other than the ones made for 640x480. So a larger resolution also just stretches these textures and scenery just like playing 640x480 would.

The only possible complaint would be if the smallest widescreen resolutions were to be unavailable to unregistered players, but I believe even non-registered users can take those?

So in the end, not as much difference as you guys are making it out to be imo.

That's obvious, It's about interface elements, weapon menu, texts which look like shit and especially console which just looks repulsive and unreadable. Text is very big and blurry, not much of it is visible at once, pretty annoying in gamemodes using console output a lot.

Well, changing resolution in Soldat gives only smaller interface objects like Health Bar etc... So, it's just a piece of that what you get by buying Soldat...

Do you realize that you just insulted a potential customer?

On the other hand if you have a crisp interface, it makes by contrast the rest of the game look even more blurry. Since the interface is on top of the game. IMO, it looks uglier if you set a higher resolution.

hello Snky,
and welcome to the forum.

Basically the option to change the resolution only affects the interface and menus. Not the game itself.
Soldat is an old game and is still in x480.
You're not missing on much if you use the unregistered version of soldat.

Hope that clear things up.

As tk said, on a 26", whether it's going to look blurred and stretched or it's going to be VERY small if the windowed mode is used. This is unbelievable, resolution is somehow included in the Registration package... It shouldn't be a reason to buy the game, but simply a reason to play the game. Resolution shouldn't be considered as a "bonus" nowadays. 10 years ago every house had its 640x480 computer screen, that doesn't mean everyone will stick to it today. Soldat is stuck in the past, it's drowning in quicksand, yet it's not dead but nobody sees it...

In conclusion, Snky raised an issue... Which is the fact that it is REALLY uncommon to pay for resolutions, well that's my point of view..

(Yet I'm not criticizing the gameplay, but simply what the game )

I think Soldat should take a new graphics in one year... New Dev team should get a new TODO: New graphics before Soldat will celebrate 10 years...

Interface in 640x480 really clutters the screen. I had an orgasm first time I ran Soldat in higher resolution. And overall I pretty much agree with what tk said - changing resolutions is not something that should be paid for.

This has been discussed over and over again during the past 5 years, and it always boils down to "No one is going to redo the graphics", which is nonsense.

One can always hope but I claim that even Shoozza et al. don't have the balls to do something like completely redesign the graphics of the game.

Feel free not to buy the game.
Buying the game was always more about supporting the author than it was about receiving benefits anyway.

somebody didn't find windowed + resize options? would spare you a lot more time if you took a look at config.exe instead of running to the forums to whine.

The whole point of high resolutions is having your interface and chat console adjust to the resolution, take up less space and look more crisp. Windowed+Resize doesn't do that - it just stretches 640x480 into a blurry mess.
Next time try to use your brain before bashing someone.

No it isn't. For a lot of people, looking through the files of any game isn't something that comes to mind emmidiately. And what good is this forum if you can't ask for help? I'll agree that this topic isn't exactly the "help-me" kind, but generally speaking people should feel welcome in that regard.
