Mac vs PC (not what you think)
« on: November 01, 2011, 03:18:21 pm »
I need a new laptop, because my old one (a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo LI181) definetly sucks. I do not like Vista, and I do not like it, because it is very slow, although I already deleted all games and other unnecessary stuff. And since I have to think about tommorow, too, it got to be smaller than my current one which is just too big with 17", because I will have to carry it to my future university and back home.

I made some research, and now need to decide between the following two:
Macbook Pro - 13.3"
Lenovo ThinkPad X220T 12.5"

The good things about the Macbook are obvious, but the ThinkPad comes with a twist: the screen can be rotated and can function as a graphic tablet, so I can draw on it, too, but unfortunatly, it is a lot more expensive, but also smaller.

Now the question is, are the additional 800€ alright or does it make more sense to buy the Macbook?

PCs > Macs, unless you can afford the cost to get the luxury of the mac os.

And win7 kicks ass. Not as much as lion depending on what you're doing, but still.

I can vouch for thinkpad awesomeness (typing this on a T510). It has a bunch of features which I can only describe as "nifty" like the keyboard light which I use pretty frequently and the internal stuff they have for protecting your harddrive. For me the highest praise is how well it handles different inputs. Apple says it just works, but lenovo delivers. I have always had a quick setup when making a presentation, just plug in VGA and the laptop does all the configuration. I have watched PC and Mac alike fuck this up and make the whole group look unprofessional while one now sweating group member tries to change his Mac's screen resolution because the laptop doesn't handle changing from widescreen laptop to standard projector.

Also the thinkpad line has been linux ready for basically forever now.

I can't tell you whether you should get a tablet version or not, they're useful for <giving> presentations or lectures or for drawing, but I've never used them productively otherwise. If you want one, buy it, otherwise there are plenty of thinkpads out there.

Also smaller does not equal worse with respect to laptops. My buddy has one thats 20 pounds and looks like the armored train from Goldeneye. But he plays crysis and I don't.

Thanks for the input, guys. I put this page to my bookmarks, because I do not like the idea of paying something by instalments, so I will save my money for the next couple of months ;)

Laptops will always be slow.

Laptops will always be overpriced.

Laptops will never be upgradable.

Laptops will always be a target for thieves.

As in highest priced laptop compared to highest priced desktop (or complete parts to build a desktop)?

But laptops are mobile. I wanna see you carry your PC around in school/university, together with different cables, a mouse and a screen. Right, you have no battery.

If you let thieves steal your laptop, that is your fault. I wanna see the burglar who would leave your 2000€ PC just because it is no laptop.

Laptops do not have to be as fast as desktops. I only need it for Photoshop, browsing and studying. No games. If I wanted to play Crisis, I would not buy a laptop.

If you want to do creative stuff, the Mac will simply be perfect for your needs. Designers, Film Editors, etc. The programs will just be handier on a Mac. I think some people didn't understand the topic title : not what you think. (lol.)

If you want to make a choice, try 'em out...

Both are very good options, I have always been a fan of the Thinkpad lines of laptops, and I use a 13" MBP at work which is also rock solid.

This Thinkpad model seems to be a bit overpriced (probably cause of Multitouch display which is likely to be pretty useless since proper Multitouch support is not common in modern windows applications). But i'd stick with thinkpad anyway. Trackpoint ftw.

4. Your fault

1. It's true. Comparatively Laptops have always, and will always lag behind the technology curve of Desktop computers by several years. Therefore, comparatively they are slow.

2. Laptops are overpriced. On average over twice as expensive per compnent than an equivalent Desktop component.

3. Technology is far less modular in laptop components than Desktop components. Due to the space constraints it takes years for new technology to be scaled down to size that can be integrated into a laptop, and due to laptops being so far behind the technology curve, the lack of modularity generally means there is 0 compatability between current technology and a 6 month old laptop because it is likely built off of scaled down obsolete technology from 3+ years ago. Therefore not upgradable - you buy a new laptop.

4. Your problem. I'm not a laptop kind of person.

Mangled, stop trying to change the topic to "Laptop vs Desktop - Mangled's Reign of Logic". I already explained I need a new laptop for university.

I will buy a Macbook Pro, because I already have a graphic tablet by Wacom, and the thinkpads are just too expensive for the additional comfort they have.

It's your money but.

At first glance, they are both obviously overpriced.

One because of the brand, the other one probably because of the multi-touch display.

Buy any laptop and install linux on it. Depending on your subject it might prove out even as necessary or more useful than Windows or Mac Os
