The big alcohol abuse topic
« on: November 02, 2011, 11:28:49 pm »
You were in need of some activity, I hate religion discussions. So here an alcohol discussion.
I know 'we all like alcohol' but do you guys agree on this guy?

http://www.npr.org/2011/08/17/139713669/explaining-why-students-love-getting-wasted

I wonder why all these older people act like this is totally shocking, it's called getting wasted right? At least twice a week for me. Never been in a hospital, can't remember some nights, but I probably don't want to remember them as well, right?
So hey, what's up with fucking your braincells if you're a student that's smarter than the average person anyway?

19, US college student, studying for BS CS.

Drunkenness makes me worse at literally everything I like doing.  I stay the hell away from loud shitty drunk people and their loud shitty "music".

It is bizarre that these people like doing such things and brag about how terrible they are at decision making as if they should be proud of it. I think that there is some expectation that the wildest partying they hear about is normal when in reality it is the outlier, so that these people believe that to be part of a social group they need to be wilder than they would otherwise like to be. US college party culture is based on a lie, and it perpetuates itself every time a moron brags about how shitfaced he got last night. Why else is binge drinking such a uniquely American problem?

17, University next year

I have never been drunk, or drunk in excess, but do know that a lot of my peers do get shitfaced/wasted/trollied regularly. Being a New Zealander, with our binge drinking culture (which isn't limited to university students) I am not surprised, but am against the idea of getting totally drunk just for the sake of getting drunk, most likely due to the group of friends I associate with who have similar ideals. From my own experiences, I do agree with the social aspect of heavy drinkers and the self perpetuation, something I will no doubt face more often as I move into a student lifestyle.

Drinking to have fun > Getting absolutly drunk

Why do people drink again? I bet not for an aching body the morning after. Why would I want to get into a state where a granny could steal all my money.. and my pride, even if I could not remember it afterwards. People who drink that much, and that often, are addicts, even if they do not give a fuck or did not realize they are yet.

18, US College Student, studying for AS CS (community college) and later BS (university).

Every week or so I use a friend's ID to get into a local club and I drink roughly 8 cups of Bud Lite. It just feels really, really good. I occasionally talk to chicks and get their numbers. I also have awesome drunken convos with guys and it just feels so great. It's hard to explain. Luckily I have friends to take care of me and drive me around after I get shit faced so there isn't an issue there.

I don't see what the big deal is if it's done responsibly.

Mind you, 8 cups is just enough to get me wobbly, giggly, and euphoric. I haven't gotten to the point of puking and peeing on myself and I don't really intend to. I'll probably just consider 9 the point of no return and not venture that far.

Drunkenness makes me worse at literally everything I like doing.  I stay the hell away from loud shitty drunk people and their loud shitty "music".

Seriously, learn to lighten up and chill every once in a blue moon. Just get a little drunk and forget about everything for a night or so.

Jesus is so drunk that his blood is wine.

I win the topic again.

I love you!

Quote
"Well, as a sociologist, I suspected that drinking is a collective activity. Students work together to decide when to drink, and how much to drink. And they also help each other out and mange their drinking episodes. So when things go wrong, there's a lot of collaboration. ... So I think as a sociologist I wanted to see drinking as a social process, and not an individual event."

So innovative! You can tell this guy went to college

It couldn't be the fact that most new students are only just old enough to buy alcohol. What else are a buch of young people with a new sense of freedom going to do.

I bought alcohol when I turned 18 a few weeks ago simply because I could.

I have been using alcohol regularly since 2004. I was 14.

These past two-three days were the first sober ones I had since May this year. Still went on and got stoned for the latter two.

The reason for my break is that I am on antibiotics due to pneumonia.

I started drinking for a variety of reasons. Coping with a damaged family background and as a way of opening up to the people I was hanging with. Originally my cousin's crowd, who were a bunch of rednecks, and besides getting blasted, we did not have much to talk about.

When my peers started drinking, it became a way for us to open up. It has helped us found the friendships which still hold today, even though I'm the only one to stay with the good ol' booze, the others either took a step back, or moved on to other drugs.

Still, the friendships have survived, no matter how distant we've grown since.

Alcohol will remain my choice. For starters, because I started drinking early, I was a much more cultured drunk by the age of being a college freshman. These people were just discovering their first serious black outs and were overtly happy about being able to project vomit after a shot too many. By that time I already knew my limits, understood my drunkenness and was able to handle it better. No passing out. No violence or collateral damage, except on my own property. Often on purpose.

I've had two very bad periods where my drinking habits were paired with either a low point of manic depression (winter of '08) and another one where we managed to free fall out of society by not going to school, not holding jobs yet still running an economy of 24/7 drunkenness.

I hold a job now, in fact I have been promoted and have a shot at moving up the company ladder despite my apparent hangover on most days, or that I am known to hit the bottle as soon as my shift ends.

I am not a social drinker anymore. Come seven AM at the end of the graveyard shift, and I want nothing more than to hit my bed with a pack of cigarettes and a bottle of white wine paired with mineral water to buzz me up.

I am a functional drunk.

A very god damn fucking effective functional drunk.

Alcoholism can enable you or cripple you, and it all depends on your mental health and the culture you culminate. It's the dependence that kills you.

So yeah. Ask away I guess.

I never drank and never will.
People always tell me that they have respect for it.

When I tell smokers, that I never smoked and never will, they even
say that that's a good choice. When I ask them why they don't stop to smoke,
they tell me that they "don't want to" or something similar.

cool story bro

My classmates and my 'friends' have allways gone on and on about how much they drank in the weekends and how fun it was. But every time I tried I simply can't understand what the people around me are laughing about. They allways say that the partys went so out of hand, when they infact barely does anything out of the ordenary. I don't like the taste, and I can have a better time playing games at home, so fuck alcohol.

For the record, I got drunk and slightly high last night at a buddies place. 7 Bottles of yuengling, one bong hit, and two joint hits.

Needless to say, I was laughing at fucking *everything* but I was computer nerd enough to get some programming homework done. I'm honestly impressed at myself for that.

College is great.

Getting drunk doesn't have any positive benefits.

The level of naivety you express sickens me. Go get fucked up and enjoy yourself.
