New gmail look

I've been using gmail since 2005 and I've always loved it. However much of my use for it is via imap/smtp clients (thunderbird, k9mail) rather than the webmail so that makes the webmail less important.

Regardless, it does look significantly nicer but the old look holds a special place in my heart.

The new look is very slick and easier to use (specifically more spacing between emails in the inbox)

If things weren't changed simply because they aren't broken, where would that leave us technologically?

There's a difference between visual style improvements and functionality improvements.

Technologically speaking that would leave us in a world where shit only gets better.

I used the new preview theme once it was available (half a year or so?) so there is not much new for me there visually.

It's ok imho.

You are still using old gmail. It's just the Preview Theme that you are using (which has been available for months).
There must be a "switch to new look" button somewhere bottom right corner.

And Shoozza: its not just a theme, it features new powerful search functionalities, new conversation view, more customizable, and a new toolbar.

Argh disappoints... Use the web interface of Gmail. its super fast, smooth, awesome.
Is it possible to use "archive" feature of Gmail with imap/smtp clients?

Yes, the "Archive" feature just moves mail from inbox to a "All Mail" folder that shows up when you connect via IMAP. And IMAP is for fetching/reading mail; SMTP is for sending.
