Change of text color for joining delta/spectator
« on: January 12, 2012, 08:05:47 pm »
When joining either the delta or spectator team, the join text color are very similar. In my opinion, they should be more distinguishable.

As it currently exists:
**** has joined delta team
**** has joined as spectator

Maybe joining spectators should be something closer to the spectator chat text color:
Spectator chat

It appears as though for Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, and Delta teams, the join game text is darker in color than the light speaking text color. Should the same scheme apply to spectators as well? I do not have a specific proposal in mind; this is up for discussion.

Refer to a post in the WriteConsole Basic Colors topic for the original suggestion.

In overall yes, I agree (add pull maybe ?), but if we follow your "darker than chat rule", then I'd also lighten the chat too as otherwise join message may come up a bit too dark.

_ has joined delta team
$FF53DF53

_ has joined as spectator
$FF52DD52

It looks same... _ has joined as spectator should have some colour like Spectators chat... But lighter or darker.

We can also change BattlEye color to #006400 (dark green) and then we have #E739B1 free and we can use it like a _ has joined as spectator. The point is to change BattlEye colour to any free good-looking and get its colour for joining spectator.

The BattlEye color does look pretty close to the chat color and probably should differ as well. Team chat also kind of looks similar to charlie chat.

I like this idea, although for my proposal I'm (for now at least) going to suggest some sort of medium cyan color.

Fixed.

Keep in mind that we unfortunately only have a finite amount of colors which aren't considered 'too close' to one another :P Maybe some sort of chart of possible colors, and then assigning them logically would help have a color have a meaning with it.
Since there were 6 categories, I figured I should base the colors around them: red green blue yellow cyan pink. Then various shades of them.

Original:

Alpha
Bravo
Charlie
Delta
Spectator
Team
Join
#E15353#5353E1#DFDF53#53DF53#52DD52
Chat
#FEE8E8#E3E8FE#FEFEE8#E8FEE8#DF7AB0#FEDA7C
Anti-cheat/BattleEye

Here is a thrown together proposal:

Alpha
Bravo
Charlie
Delta
Spectator
Team
Join
#E15353#5353E1#DFDF53#53DF53#E739B1
Chat
#FEE3E3#E3E1FE#FEFEE3#E3FEDF#FEE3FE#D0FEF0
Anti-cheat/BattleEye
  • I tried to make the speaking text slightly more distinguishable, but not much different. Made all of them slightly darker. Made blue less green, and green less blue.
  • Spectator chat color changed to match the purple/pink look.
  • Team chat color changed to avoid looking like the charlie too much. I tried to make it not look like bravo too much. It is difficult to tell if this is appropiate for in-game when trying to view it on the forum (since the blue background :P).
  • Anti-cheat color changed due to spectator taking its color.

Thoughts and comments?

I should probably look at the other text colors and see if changing them should be considered. For the shades: chat = very-light, join team = medium
We can probably get one or two more easily distinguishable shades for each of the 6 color groupings: dark, and very-dark. These could be used for all the other text colors. I want to have 'related' text be near the same color if possible. E.g. Connection Problem could be similar to in color _ has been kicked from console. because they both have to do with not being in-game anymore. Maybe. Was just a thought; there might be something more appropriate.

I can't agree with changing Teamchat color. Yellow is the most visible color for human eye. While I play cw I want to see teamchat commands without any troubles. Let's say it that differences between Alpha/Bravo/Charlie/Delta Chat aren't visible in game. I think that bigger revolution is needed like:

[Bonecrusher] And I'll slice you by my knife :P
[Curt] Who cares while my team wins?
[Falcon] No more ;D
(TEAM)[Eskhata] Okay, let's focus and let they die!
(of course yellow looks like it looks on white, but maps aren't full lighted in reality)

That would be a progress...

The color for the anti-cheat and spectator joined texts look better in the way that they don't interfere with the team colors. I would make the spectator joined text color a bit less vibrant though, as it isn't something that affects the game enough to have such a powerfull color. The same goes for the anti-cheat text, but the other way around. Another problem would be that the team chat color looks way to much like the normal chat colors; it should be easy to see the difference so you don't have to look extra hard at the chat when you're in need for some critical information from your team.

Here's what I would do:

Alpha
Bravo
Charlie
Delta
Spectator
Team

Okay, but those "cheap solutions"... Isn't it possible to do something more like the thing I propossed?

Sure, that would work even better. The colors of the names could in that case be the same as the join game text colors. I don't know if it would be possible to get it done before the next release though, but I might do it if I have time after I've fixed a few bugs.

As for the colors of other console messages, I think some of the less interesting/important ones (time left, requesting game, etc.) should be more "grayish".

Any other ideas before I start changing stuff?

I like the look. I agree the name color should be the same as the join game text color.

I want to make note that if they are all grayed too much, they may look too similar to one another.

I need  some some sort of reference of colors, so I threw together a table. It probably should be adjusted to make the colors appear to the most different, but that wasn't really taken into account other than on the first medium table. I am by no means a professional or experienced in human sight of color & interpretation. "Yellow is the most visible color for human eye." - I know I personally find yellow one of the more annoying colors :P (I mean 100% red, 100% green, 0% blue without adjustment; making it closer to a 'gold' color does help drastically :P).

Is alpha/transparency/opaqueness supported in text color? If yes, I just want to make note that it is a possibility to modify, but I don't feel as though it is a good idea to use, but thought it should still be brought up.

Good table, Curt! But I see that dark and 1/2 gray, dark are very similar... Also, red, yellow, green, cyan, blue aren't all existing colours e.g. orange, venomous pink/fuchsia. So we can take them for other opportunities.
