I seriously think that it's time for soldat to improve graphics and gameplay a lot.

better graphics, much smoother animations and more features. How are you going to sell a game which hasn't made a significant improvement (something bigger than weapon changes and bug fixes) for years?

I'm not talking about cheesy animations or anything 3d . I'm talking about a more dynamic and smoother gameplay.

What's so cheesy about better and more fluid animations?

It's made with flash and flash is a fucking CPU killer. If I can't run Binding with Isaac or Realm of Mad God without slight delay/fps problems how do I ever imagine to play that?

Edit:

Soldat supports great graphics and visuals, all it lacks is great, artistic and creative mappers.

Edited the title so people will understand that I don't want a copy of that game as soldat... just the idea of improving it (for maybe some more modern standards?)

edit:
also, congrats on your 666 th post. I know you can't reply to thank me so yeah :D

Nothing.

Soldat could use a graphic improvement, It's been 10 years now and the game looks exactly the same as it did back then. However, as things are now we're just lucky to have the game alive, and after all the bug and netcode fixing the logical step would be to work on the graphics... but it just seems so far away. I think it'd be easier to start a game from scratch with the same concept as Soldat that uses more advantages of modern hardware.

And there's none problem with the FPS (isn't just about the maps, it's about the entire game, how it works using LCD monitors and bla bla bla)  :-*

Totally agree..

Plus, new generations of gamers are emerging and none of them would even touch soldat in this state in my opinion (without an improvement).
Most of the games get popular, players quit playing it and new players take their place. In soldat's case, we're always whining because of this game getting less and less popular.. the only problem is that there are very few new players to enjoy the game and then even less that actually buy it.

indie games are getting more popular, so games with lesser graphics aren't doomed (well.. soldat graphics are). Lets just hope somebody makes a soldat 2 :p

If mappers would just be creative enough to create their own sceneries and textures from scrap, that would itself be enough improvement. Virtual TT's maps for instance are buttshit beautiful as hell.

And this is propably my 150th 666th post.

Intrusion 2 maps are made of images instead of pure polygons. While this isn't necessarily a bad thing, it feels very different from Soldat, and would take much more effort to implement. Soldat's polygonal maps give the game a unique visual style since very few games rely on polygon-based levels. All it needs is support for higher-res textures and sceneries, basic parallax backgrounds and like Smiluu said - skilled mappers with great artistic skills. Soldat maps are like paintings - there are very few technical limitations, so how good the map turns out depends almost entirely on the mapper.

As for character models - here I somewhat agree, Intrusion 2 beats Soldat. But once again it comes down to resolution. If Soldat supported high-res sprites - objects and soldiers would look just as good as in Intrusion 2. Soldat's animations are unique in places, but also plain bad in some places too. A good balance between smoothness and.. "Soldatness" would be an improvement without looking too cheezy.

How hard would it be to make Soldat support high res sprites? We should absolutely try and see what Soldat would look like with sprites, items etc. recreated to atleast 2x resolution and details.

While I agree that soldat could look better there are actually people who have a hard time to play it at all (low fps). Adding better gfx would make it impossible for them to play.
So before the gfx enhancement stuff I'll have to clean up the rendering code. There are a lot of things that need to be rewritten and rendering is one of them.

If we improve the gfx we need to make sure that Soldat needs to keep it's soldatish feeling :P

I'd be happy if it was recreated in 800x600. No need to go "HD".

And more perfectionism in textures, sceneries, shading, ... would help a lot.

The game you linked to has better graphics than Soldat. That's obvious.
So if it can help give inspiration to the developers and the community, it's a good thing you posted it.

I find it ridiculous that we're in 2012 and people still have pc-s on which soldat lags...

i5-2500k, 8gb ram, gtx 560... and on some maps (non-default) I don't get over 60 fps... doesn't really matter what kind of hardware you have, soldat just won't run on high fps.
