Can bots record demos?
« on: December 11, 2012, 02:38:58 pm »
Hey, dunno if this is the right place to ask this, but here it goes: can bots record demos? Like, if I leave a bot on spectators, can I set it to record a demo if at least one player is in the server?

Thanks. :)

If possible, I could really see this idea developing into many main server functions...I would like to see it for running servers like RunMode and Hide n' Seek a lot. Maybe part of the net code has to be editted but I don't see anyway how it's possible o.O

Since everything is running over the server, the data just needs to get logged in the format the client demos use it also (not saying with the "just", that it is super easy). Of course it is work, but it is possible. I don't know the source code of soldat to say if you can (as an example) use a similar way like the client makes demos. But definately possible. :)

Serverside demo recording would be pretty useful!
I'm hoping it will be added someday.

@Haste and ExHunter: Wasn't the "Dummy" bot that was used in the very first versions of !Runmode server using something similar? They could track the time between each checkpoints of players. How much different is this than serverside demo-ing?

The dummies do not actually have any scripting functions of their own. They are just bots that cannot move, shoot or speak. !runmode pretends that they are doing the work ;)

The Dummy-Bot was there to get the full 60hz-AOI timer. That was not related to it at all.
