Help tab in the menu
« on: December 23, 2012, 07:45:02 pm »
Shoozza wanted me to discuss this publicly

As soldat manual is hardly accessible and very unintuitive to find in the stack of various folders and files, there should be some easier way for the new Soldat players to find help (considering how hard is to get around Soldat gameplay at the beginning)

The solution may be implementing another tab to the soldat menu - titled Help. That would be the place for the ingame manual along with, possibly, links to community sites, leagues, video tutorials guides and stuff like that. "Help" menu is kind of a standard thing in most games so i don't think of this idea as any eccentric, and i think it would be quite useful if we want fresh blood to stay for longer.

ive put up a poll, bitches love polls

There are 3 problems with that:
1) requires us to add internet explorer component which will not be very portable when moving to lazarus compiler (which would allow us to port soldat to linux etc)
2) the manual is not translated so it will show English manual while rest of the GUI could be in another Langauge
3) the manual was not created to fit into the Soldat GUI - it would look ugly

One way around this:
Just make a link which shows the manual the default browser,
but then you still have a lot of empty space...

GUI Mockups anyone?

1) well the links are not so important, i was talking mainly about the manual itself
2) true, i don't believe people will tranlsate such huge chunk of text into X languages either. It won't look good but i think it's better to have it that way than no way
3) let's change the GUI finally! :)

Also my input on how it should look:
I agree that there should be a tab in Soldat labeled "Help", and in there be the Soldat manual, however I think an extra addition would be to add other stuff as well, not just the manual. Other stuff as in other links helpful to Soldatters, links to Polywork download, SSCC, tutorials to basic Soldat movement, tutorials of weapons, and a lot of other helpful sub-tabs that would make it more neat and organized.
Here's an extremely rough sketch about what I have in mind:

Adding guides in different languages on that tab isn't nice.
It would be ok to have english and "your default language" there but displaying some guides in languages you don't understand isn't helpful.

IMHO the manual should be the first link. Tutorials and stuff like IRC guides aren't that important.
It's not about "we need to fill this empty space" maybe just two links would be enough (links with info about what they are about).
