Is this game dead?

Hello, I just bought the game, but there's only around 100 players on the game. What happened to everyone?

I'm moving this topic to General Discussions as you aren't reporting a bug in the game.

this game is very old but worth it, most of us are playing it 5-10 years and can't get bored of it. The amount of players is little but i don't think the game will die any soon, Soldat has very dedicated fans.

As mentioned above, if you want to enjoy the game in its fullest you should get into the community, hanging around irc channels and playing gathers.

This game is less popular than 2 years ago, when i started play this. Now i think only SCTFL works. But unproffesional players also playing on publics and i think there is no problem with finding players.

if this game is dead, i wonder how my server fills up at 4 AM....  ;)

@ Gen.Gordon :

I think it would, there's 100thousands of players in steam watching for new games, even if the game is 10 years old, they may never heard of it, as 99.99% of the people i know dont know Soldat at all.... the lack of activity is defenetly cauze the game never has been advertised for years.

i think it was in discussion that soldat goes onto steam when the green light of steam was, but if i remember right dev's sayd it will propably go with the new "fixed" version on Steam. (I hope so badly...)

Anyways, the 14 Dollars is it worthing defenetly :)

Game is half-dead already. Without any drastic changes, for example steam, game has no future. I am not pessimistic just realistic. And if it was not for the small realistic community that still excist I would have moved on long time ago.

Yes Soldat is half dead, and I'll give you the reasons why :

1) Almost no fresh blood joining the active communities because the advertisement is close to 0
2) No anti cheat for a while, some hackers/cheaters even managed to win the most succesful soldat league ever
3) Kids rather play mainstream games with awesome graphics, it's harder to attract them to play Soldat than before

So, let's get the game on Steam, somebody make a proper anticheat system and you old guys who are above 21 go make babies and get them to play soldat, this way Soldat will live forever.

Also, this is my personal thought, but I believe that we should get more people to play normal/realistic ctf, rather than knife only and all the other mods. (these are examples I have nothing against knife only players)
Obviously the last bit will not please everybody and many people will disagree but SCTFL and SRL are the most succesful leagues there are at the moment so if we want the game to be like it was we need more people playing competitively.

And if you disagree it's your total right, just my 2cents as an old fellow soldateer who's been around for way too long...

@up please refrain from pointless posts like that. If u dont have anything good to say better not say anything. It's not dead when there are still players who enjoy playing and some of them arent going anywhere anytime soon. If u already see soldat as dead please leave and dont make us mad. If you like soldat listen to your post and get on gathers/publics and boost activity by one player, step by step solutions.

@Boots/ginn: I can not ignore infantile talk like yours no more. While it may be true that Soldat has seen much better times than today, you have to note that there still is an active player base that is filling public servers. At peek times, I cannot join any of Bonecrusher's CTF servers, because all of them are filled, and that is enough proof for me that this game is not dead yet. As long as there is one single player playing this game - even if it is an offline bot match - I do not consider this game as dead. Stop this hyperbolism of stacked stupidity and do something productive for this game. If every person that whined about this game being dead advertised it in some forum or showed it to his friends in the well saved time, the situation would be a different one. Now, I wonder whether you care enough to use your energy for this cause? I think not so, or else you would not talk like that.

I've put in some effort, streaming (including posting schedules) and a few tutorials.
The game is pretty much dead, 4-5 servers being filled doesn't make it alive, the competitive scene still has some players but it's really going down hill. Btw according to your definition even atari games are well and alive.

What annoys me about many who claim to care for this game is this hyperbolism of calling Soldat dead. By definition, death is final and irreversible, and Soldat is far from that point. It's great that you two actually do something for the community, which is a lot more than most others do, but stop this exaggeration.

If someone has cancer you might also call him dead and Soldat has cancer as well.
The problem is that there are not enough ppl. coming from outside and the time will come when the players who play soldat right now step away from it.
The game has been led totally wrong in the past years.

Soldat is a 10 year old 2d game, some decrease in playerbase was expected especially when games like League of legends are in their prime. Iif we continue our efforts along with devs we can prolong it's death by atleast few years.Truth to be told soldat doesn't have anything to offer for new players. Let's get into newbie skin who downloads soldat joins any server and gets DESTROYED by everyone, then rages and probably never picks it up again.

Will be easy to bring it back from its death once it gets new graphics and a working anticheat. Waste of time discussing placing it on Steam or advertising it in any other way before these two things happen. And they won't happen while there's a group of demotivated developers working on a game. As things stand right now, everybody who hasn't spend most of his/her childhood in the 90's will just puke and ALT+F4 right after he/she double-clicks on soldat.exe.

It's rly cool the devs are focusing on little things like bullet shells having a slight randomness in their velocity or making flags less likely to get stuck in polygons. Better than nothing. But for remaking the whole graphics and getting a decent anticheat working, you need to pay the guys. Nobody will do time consuming things in his free time just like that. I've already told Fryer the devs should consider launching a Bitcoin fundraising, where there'd be some amount of BTC required to be donated before a certain bug is fixed or a feature added. The game's not gettin' anywhere right now. Either find a way to motivate ppl working on it, or just fuck it, open source it and let it go its own way, whether it'd mean  the game dying or being reborn in some obscure way.

there is no future for the game though, from looking at the efforts put in to the game.

since 1.4 there has been that many useless changes, something drastic needs to happen to keep people interested.

Like upgrading all the old default maps to visually appealing ones. I have yet to receive message by the mapping team for some suggestions for replacements. I am growing angry a little about such manners, because it's been weeks without reply, and even after another short note, nothing. It's frustrating to bother with mapping, so I moved on to other projects. One thing at a time. The development team is doing great progress for people who are dedicated enough to do the job absolutly for free. I, for one, very much enjoy the new found capabilities for scripting.

The development team is doing great progress for people who are dedicated enough to do the job absolutly for free. I, for one, very much enjoy the new found capabilities for scripting.

One by one.
Do the players really care about more scripting capabilities?

Everyone only plays in servers that are scripted to hell and back, so yeah.

not really, zabijaka and one shit kill servers are sort of the only popular ones, they only have basic scripts.

Uh oh, yeah we should just forget about the competitive community altogether. Why should anyone give fucks about the tiny, meaningless group of people who just happen to have played the game for five to ten years.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. My point is that, at this point, scripting is important. Not that nonscripted servers are unimportant.

Dusty, I've played for going on 10 years myself, and I do prefer servers that don't have scripts altering gameplay; I just feel like more than a few of the popular servers in the lobby are scripted to have role playing elements and so on.

This game won't be dead if it has players and people who care about it.

How about saying that development of soldat is dead instead? Seems like nothing major or important was improved in last 2 years..

They have fixed some netcode issues for the next patch... not sure if it'll ever be released though.

Im not saying that people on dev team are lazy morons, probably they are very cool guys,
but come on development is as it is, that don't seem to be very active for whatever reason.

You are pretty unthankful for the team of developers that is dedicated enough to do all this in their free time, without charging money from the community for what they do. Be happy with what we have and stop staring to the stars. There's no answer up there. If you want the pace to increase, become active yourself.

There are tons of software that is writed for free these days, nothing that special about that,
so don't need to bow.

All i said that development wasn't active and nothing major happened, and its true, isn't?
I would be interested why is that, people have no time?, its furstrating job?
Did that money what soldat makes(did?) reached devs?
There wheres some donations, did only Shoozza get it or all of them?

There is other options like, opensource, start make donations and demand features, find someone else..,

DarkCrusade, seeing that game is well and alive wouldn't be dreaming? Better luck in thous stars then.

I am not denying that there could have been more progress, but you have to differentiate between mere software and video games. I have yet to see a free online game with no cash-shop of some sort. I respect your opinion, but see no reason to call this game dead if it has enough people caring for it to have a discussion going on whether it is dead or not.

You can have 1,000 awesome suggestions to increase the pace at which progress is made, but if you don't voice them, they are worthless. Now we get to talk.

There is other options like, opensource, start make donations and demand features, find someone else..,

Opensourcing Soldat has been discussed a million times by now. If you want to get into this topic, check this topic: link. The community demanded even more than a million features already, but they cannot add another 1,000 lines of new code when there are 10,000 lines of bugged code or code that needs to be refactored first.

To put it in a nutshell: I agree that more progress would have been nice, but you are being too harsh in your judgement of the developer team, and should be thankful that they are dedicated enough to do this for free. Lower your standards. It's not normal that they sacrifice their free time to develop a game they do not own rights of and manage the community.

Well, i've introduced ScriptCore3. Whenever it's a major change or not is, of course, up to you to decide. As for me it was a huge task to perform. Let's hope it'll be worth the effort.

I would be interested why is that, people have no time?, its furstrating job?
No time yes, most if not all of us (devs) have jobs, i have job + school on weekends (not now however, holidays), so no much time left for soldat.
Also as a programmer yourself, i think you know that this work can be frustrating sometimes regardless of the circumstances. It's even more here, as soldat is a very poorly written code, so "funny exceptions" happen rather often.

Did that money what soldat makes(did?) reached devs?
Registration payments were all going to MM himself afaik if that's what you're asking.

There wheres some donations, did only Shoozza get it or all of them?
I didn't receive anything, at least not for my dev work. I'm not saying i should though, i've never stated that i'm developing soldat for money, so i don't expect any in reward.
AFAIK Shoozza is recieveing.... cookies from MM yearly. Whenever he gains some money is unknown to me.

There is other options like, opensource, start make donations and demand features, find someone else..,
I'd personally go for opensource, the only con here is that cheaters would have an easier work but let's face it, it can't get much worse as it is now.
Honestly i have no idea what's stoping the code from being opensourced, my hunch is telling me that it's Shoozza standing in between with his bureaucratic attitude, not MM.

Well, there was the 16:9 patch and key for flag throw... the rest hasn't been very useful. The scriptcore seems mostly useless, nobody uses it, except for zombie servers...

@ginn: I am using it to its fullest extent. You may not know much about scripting, but it's huge. I am able to get the job done much better than before, with less effort, better structure and what-not. Its worth will be visable once a few scripters adapted it and release new content. I, for one, am working on a huge gamemode.

@Falcon: I read something about commercial coding-related stuff in Soldat that would need to be removed in order for Soldat to be ready for open-source without lawyers knocking at MM's door. I cannot recall which thread it was in, though. Most likely, Shoozza will have a better answer to that anyway.

He could remove commercial related stuff and release without. With a list of what's required and where to put it to make things work of course so that people can "acquire" that commercial code in their own... ways.
Also i'm curious how new scriptcore makes your life easier already as it's not yet documented.

My earlier scripting projects for RPG-based servers all failed, because the scripts were so clustered with functions that I simply lost the overview. With the addition of units, I am able to categorize functions and have a cleaner core.

There are reasons why soldat is not opensource - yet.

One reason is the autoupdater, which isn't opensource.
The another is the missing anticheat in the current versions (it would be closed source and optional).
Also MM wants/might want to use the release of soldat as opensource for some game advertisement.
Then you people want soldat to be available on steam and I'm not sure if that would work out if the game is already open source.

The current plan is to port soldat to linux, osx and release it in the humblebundle with the sourcecode and get enough support to make it through greenlight.

With the next release the server will already run on linux, osx and windows.
There are also plans to move away from SVN to a DVCS like Mercurial or Git this would make it easier to get patches from other people (if for example soldat had a mirror on Github, Bitbucket, Sourceforge, Google Code etc).

@DarkCrusade
Well i could agree that game nor development you can call dead,
its so important that i use word "dead"?
I wanted to make point more about future.

I see that servers are getting closed and people leave,
game whit poor performances, expecting Steam launch that i cant see happen, then seeing some people that rate all dev job as great always,
is kinda annoying.

All i said that development wasn't active and nothing major happened, and its true, isn't?

I can appreciated that, i was over-dramatizing.
Dont get impression that i think i would do better.

@Shoozza
You can remove autoupdater and librarys, opensource code that dosnt work, it
doesnt matter.

Steam and linux/osx port feels so distant. When you see that happen?

Just my 2 cents:
Due to lack of time I nearly stopped playing Soldat myself but recently I've been discussing this issue with couple of players from polish community. We all agreed that what Soldat needs the most right now, aside from obvious bug fixes, are new and better graphics. There are already mods and maps on this forum showing that you don't even need to change anything in the rendering code to make Soldat look a lot better. It'd be great if all the default maps and sprites were replaced by newer, better versions. Of course working anti-cheat would also be nice.

Wow,I haven't been around for about 3-4 years and back then this game was so fun. Sad to see it started to die out :( But yea, other games are more attractive to players these days and I never saw any advertisement except when I first played in 2007 or whatever lol. Whatever,we all grow up,let it gooooo~
