Looking for Enthusiastic Blender Suite Mappers
« on: July 12, 2013, 05:18:32 pm »
Hey,

after checking out this thread and being astonished by this pic (all done by Mr. aint`bazz) I believe I wasn't the only one who asked himself "How is THIS not the default soldat look yet?"

Well, after speaking to Fryer, all that is needed is a dedicated group of mappers that can redo at least 50% of the default ctf maps. That is the threshold Fryer has said would motivate him enough to write the python script that is needed to make replacing the old maps with maps made in Blender possible. Ofc, all the graphical remakes would need to be at least as good as the one of ctf_Ash.

So idk. I'm just throwing it out there to everyone who thinks soldat maps need a graphical redesign to look appealing to old and new players alike. If you know or used to know any mapper, try to reach him and ask him if he'd up for it.

Here's the edited copy of our chat:
Quote
[19:02:57] [@Majoman] did you see this, Fryer`? http://img716.imageshack.us/img716/78/ashblend.jpg
[19:04:10] [@Fryer`] yeah Majoman
[19:04:20] [@Majoman] what are your thoughts about it?
[19:04:51] [@Fryer`] artistically it's much better than probably all current maps
[19:05:04] [@Majoman] yeah, obviously
[19:05:10] [@Majoman] I'm not talkin' 'bout that
[19:05:19] [@Fryer`] what then?
[19:05:25] [@Majoman] I mean, how hard would it be to integrate it into soldat?
[19:05:37] [@Fryer`] integrate what?
[19:05:41] [@Majoman] blender
[19:05:45] [@Majoman] you know
[19:05:57] [@Fryer`] all that's needed is a pms exporter script really
[19:06:00] [@Majoman] like making maps made in blender being supported in soldat
[19:06:03] [@Majoman] well
[19:06:08] [@Majoman] how hard would it be to make one?
[19:06:30] [@Fryer`] easy for someone with a knowledge of python
[19:06:48] [@Majoman] let's say there is someone rly good at python
[19:06:56] [@Majoman] how many hours of work would you guess is needed?
[19:07:17] [@Fryer`] 1 2 3
[19:07:22] [@Fryer`] not much
[19:07:28] [@Fryer`] if you know the map format
[19:07:33] [@Majoman] why is it not done then?
[19:07:52] [@Majoman] nobody from the devs can work in python?
[19:07:55] [@Fryer`] because there is polyworks and it's not high demand and nobody knows how easy it is
[19:08:05] [@Majoman] you can't do shit like that in PW tho
[19:08:08] [@Majoman] so why sticking to it?
[19:08:14] [@Majoman] soldat is utterly ugly, it needs a change
[19:08:25] [@Fryer`] you can do shit like that in pw
[19:08:28] [@Fryer`] just not as easily
[19:08:44] [@Fryer`] and there aren't many mappers around atm
[19:08:48] [@Majoman] if nobody can do it in PW but somebody can do it in blender, why not helping him?
[19:08:54] [@Fryer`] if there were, i bet someone would do it
[19:09:11] [@Majoman] not if nobody knows about it
[19:10:45] [@Fryer`] i would be happy to do it if there was enough demand for something like it
[19:10:59] [@Majoman] define enough demand?
[19:11:00] [@Fryer`] but the mapping scene is void
[19:11:03] [@Majoman] more than one mapper?
[19:11:09] [@Fryer`] yeah
[19:11:16] [@Fryer`] more than 0
[19:11:19] [@Majoman] what if that one mapper is a super no life with endless amount of free time?
[19:11:21] [@Majoman] well
[19:11:24] [@Majoman] there's one already
[19:11:28] [@Majoman] that's more than 0 ;)
[19:12:04] [@Fryer`] well, there seems to be almost nothing happening, huge lack of activity in the mapping scene
[19:12:07] [@Majoman] I will be happy to open topics on both sctfl and soldatforums asking for ppl willing to revamp current soldat maps in blender
[19:12:11] [@Majoman] if it'd help you
[19:12:16] [@Fryer`] AGES since i saw a good map on soldat.mapping
[19:12:19] [@Majoman] we don't need new maps
[19:12:26] [@Majoman] we just need to revamp old ones
[19:12:27] [@Majoman] that's all
[19:12:40] [@Majoman] like that pic you saw, that's just ctf_ash
[19:12:45] [@Majoman] and it looks fucking great
[19:12:51] [@Fryer`] if you make that topic
[19:12:55] [@Majoman] I will
[19:13:08] [@Fryer`] tell ppl i'll make an exporter script if enough maps are converted
[19:13:13] [@Fryer`] and if they ar good
[19:13:18] [@Majoman] ok
[19:13:21] [@Majoman] what is enough maps?
[19:13:36] [@Majoman] well
[19:13:43] [@Majoman] 100% of current default maps or less?
[19:13:55] [@Majoman] I mean ctf maps for now ofc
[19:14:44] [@Fryer`] 50%, all much better visually (that screen as guideline), and i'll do it
[19:16:44] [@Fryer`] not expecting very much to happen tbh .-.
[19:16:56] [@Majoman] well
[19:17:00] [@Majoman] worth a shot
[19:17:06] [@Fryer`] sure
[19:17:10] [@Majoman] seems like the last chance for an improved look
[19:17:22] [@Majoman] which would be a great 1st step for reviving the game
[19:17:34] [@Majoman] all that is need afterwards is a working anticheat
[19:17:34] [@Fryer`] is that ashblender guy still around?
[19:17:40] [@Majoman] fuck eats, it's pretty good as it's now
[19:17:47] [@Majoman] yeah, it's a new topic kinda
[19:17:54] [@Majoman] may 2013 I think
[19:17:57] [@Fryer`] k
[19:18:19] [@Fryer`] maybe pm him too, perhaps it'll give him motivation :p
[19:18:35] [@Majoman] ok, nice idea
[19:18:41] [@Majoman] cool to see you're up for it, bud ;)
[19:19:19] [@Majoman] original topic btw: http://forums.soldat.pl/index.php?topic=42614.0
[19:19:26] [@Fryer`] well, just because i don't really think it'll happen
[19:19:36] [@Fryer`] but yeh, i'll do it if it happens
[19:20:06] [@Majoman] :P
[19:20:29] [@Fryer`] hmm
[19:20:44] [@Fryer`] he says he wants to do it?
[19:20:52] [@Majoman] yeah, check the original topic
[19:21:35] [@Majoman] actually
[19:21:43] [@Majoman] he said: "I could provide .DAE(somewhat popular 3d model format) to .PMS converter."
[19:21:50] [@Majoman] is that what we were just talking about?
[19:22:05] [@Majoman] this thing would needed to be coded in python?
[19:22:14] [@Majoman] I mean idk anything about these things, but it seems so
[19:28:17] [@Fryer`] well, dae can be opened in blender afaik
[19:28:51] [@Fryer`] so an exporter for blender would be the same thing, just with a middle step
[19:29:26] [@Fryer`] i don't know the dae format and i have no interest in learning it, so i wont do that
[19:31:19] [@Majoman] what would you need to convert then?
[19:32:25] [@Majoman] well, don't matter, I'll just make a topic sayin' you're willing to make replacing old maps with these done in blender possible, if there's someone who can revamp at least 50% of the default ctf maps
[19:32:36] [@Majoman] I think that's clear enough

There are thousands of tutorials on Blender out there. The good thing is that Blender is absolutly free, but difficult to get into. Just look for some polygon tutorials on Google and I am sure that you will find what will help you with getting started.

Who was the guy who made the screenshot again? - So who made this work... ?
I will read some tutorials about all that tomorrow. I hope there will be some volunteers who are experienced in doing maps and might imagine doing that because this would be the best thing which would have happened to soldat within the last 5 years.

Try to spread this a bit maybe there are some ppl. on SCTFL.net who might care.

I thought it was clear enough from the topic I linked but I'm editing my post so that there's the guy's name right next to the pic.

Also yeah, I've made the same topic at sctfl.net ofc :)

After reading some further discussion on IRC I've realised that the map in the screenshot is multi-textured, which wasn't something I was paying attention to at the moment. The limitations of the current map format still apply.

<DutchFlame`> i once heard running runescape in the background gave you a speedboost
<Mr> yes, it allocates more electrons, so there are more electrons available for Soldat -> they are streched less and it is more fluent

Yeah what Fryer said.

..thing is that making only exporter for blender really wont improve how maps will look,
for what you see in that pic and make in effective you would need to modify soldat.
