Bring autodemo back to how it was before.
« on: July 31, 2013, 01:42:53 pm »
This last version completely ruined the autodemo function. I just played a cw of 2 maps, and that made me save 9 demos.

The new name thing is so so, it makes it difficult to go trough the demos quickly, since you now need to copy paste instead of changing a number. I suppose it's ok to have it like that, but it'd be nice with an option.
Though, why the fuck is it saving every map? I don't want to have 100 demos in my folder when I only really wanted to save one of them.

If you thought it was bad going trough 200-300 demos to make a movie... have fun going trough 1-2k demos instead! Without any ability to swiftly changing to the next demo in line.

Hmm... The whole demo system needs some well thought-out love. A demo viewing tab would solve the problem with managing and viewing demos instead of having to copy-paste names from your Windows folder into Soldat's server IP field.

As for creating a boatload of demos, there might be some more elegant solutions for clans, such as only starting the auto-recording when a map is selected by a /map, /restart or script command. That way the purgatory map between rounds wouldn't get recorded.

I'm just farting out ideas though. The previous demo system was also quite flawed, and a complete revert is unlikely.

I don't want a demo of every map I play, the only demos I want to save is those with something nice in them. You could make the non-autorecord option function like the old autorecord.

Partly offtopic, there should be options to:

- not record unless F8 is pressed
- record and save everything
- record the last n minutes of play and save in the end of the round or on keypress

The last one being the most desired option, though I have no idea if it's even feasible. Of course a proper demo system in which you could skip to a certain point, fast forward and even rewind would work too. This with the last option would be lovely. Starting recording after spawning wouldn't work especially in the normal game because of how often people die and respawn, the actions don't alwys end when the player dies.

The previous system was good in a way that, I think, you could set the recording time long enough to capture the whole round and choose whether or not you want to save the demo. Flawed but definitely better than how it is now.

The normal F8 feature where you press F8 to start demo and F8 to stop it, is useless, and should be replaced by the old autodemo feature where Autorecord=0 should record everything when F8 is pressed.
The new autodemo feature is good if you want to record everything, good for tournaments. I have heard that ''record the last n minutes of play'' is too hard to implement..

Keep an eye on the demos folder and remove useless demos more often.

I just played a cw of 2 maps, and that made me save 9 demos.
Did you connect to those 7 other maps before, between and after those matches? In that case there's nothing wrong with the function. It's better to auto save it all than miss something accidentally marvelous, although I'm not against variations.
