Cortex Command is similiar in that it is a sidescroller shooter.

I wouldn't recommend cortex command for low end computers though. This game might look simple, but it's written in technology that is epic slow unless you have a good PC.

Attach computer specs and it will be easier.
Here you have a cool tool that can guide you on this topic, it's called Can you run it?
It's not fully precise but you can get an idea on how your game can work and what will fail.

My suggestion is Quake live

Oh and man, play soldat!

EDIT: if else fails go for those birds that are quite angry, at least it will keep you away from boredom for some time

If you like FPS shooters, any game with darkplaces/quake/cube engine is good to go. Most have very vast selection of things you can mod and config for extra frames and better performance. Games below are completely free and has tons of community thriven content.

If you're fine with games where you don't kill anyone, I suggest you try some of Nifflas' games. Most of them are platformers that focus on exploration and avoiding obstacles, and some of them are free (Knytt, Knytt Stories, FiNCK, Within a Deep Forest) I especially recommend checking out Knytt Stories since it supports custom levels which there are tons of made by the community.

You can also look around http://db.tigsource.com which has a lot of indie games with low system requirements.
