New Soldat-like Game
« on: August 23, 2006, 12:33:47 pm »
Hello everyone,

I made a joking claim that I would create a game like Soldat here:http://forums.soldat.pl/index.php?topic=3803.20

Anyway, the responses got me thinking, why not create a game like Soldat, but with the features I want?  I type up a little idea text already:

Soldat II
--
use weapon - LMB
use tool - RMB
left - A
right - D
jump - W
crouch - S
prone - X
toggle weapon (primary, secondary) - Q
toggle tool (grenade, rope, etc.) - Z
enter/exit vehicle - E
toggle fire mode (single, burst, scope, etc.) F
reload - R

Any weapon can be primary, not any weapon can be secondary
If two secondaries selected, they are dual wielded

Must be balanced:
rate of fire
bullet speed
reload time
clip size
Recoil (self-bink)

Primary:          Alternate:
Sniper Rifle      Scope
Shotgun          Double-barrel (doubles reload time too)
Assault Rifle     Burst (original auto)
Bazooka          Guided

Secondary:
Magnum
Uzi

Tool:
Rope
Grenade
Smoke Grenade
Knife
Mine

Vehicles/Emplacements:
Turret
Ground Car
Helicopter
Armored Transport
--

Obviously the name won't be "Soldat II", but I figure this will take me a few years, so I'll have plenty of time to think of a name.  I guess I'm looking for some feedback right now.  Is this a good idea? Bad idea? Do you have weapon or gameplay suggestions?

Yea, I got a suggestion.

Immidiate jet discharge.
double click the jet button and you will get boosted in the direction you desire (by using the WASD keys)
it will kick you off really fast for a short distance. and this will ofcourse eat half of your jet fuel.

What do you plan to code this with?

I was planning on having a rope (think Liero) instead of Jets.  Keep in mind this is a game in the STYLE of Soldat, not a Soldat clone.

What do you plan to code this with?
C++, using either OpenGL or DirectX.

Use OpenGL plx.

I tried making a Soldat like game in GameMaker with 1 map and 1 gamemode (ctf) to test peoples suggestion ideas. I got lazy after the first weekl :/

use open gl, and make sure it will compile for linux, bsd, solarix, windows, and mac. keep it open sourced, and get it onto ubuntu repositories and setup a site on sourceforge.com. make it able to read .PMS files.

Customizable controls, because i don't like X being the prone key.
Neat graphical effects (lighting, more sparks and particles, etc.) and physics items.
Other neat ideas that have come up in the past that didn't exactly fit in soldat.

By the time you remake soldat, the source code would have been released ;)

Any progress?
I'd suggest also looking into the Torque Game Builder at www.garagegames.com/

For getting something up and going ASAP, it may be a viable option IMO.

EDIT: Limited? Games run on both Mac and Windows, particle engine included, and best of all - it can use OpenGL. It's not hard to master and is far superior to GameMaker which someone mentioned above.
You'd be able to get something up and going with TGB quicker than if you were to hand code everything from scratch, even if you do use SDL etc.
Cons? Poor multiplayer support at the moment, but perfect for a single player game.

Just my opinion.

Digi

Sounds interesting.  I'm all for it.
To sum up my point: We had a multipage debate about toilet padding. (Putting TP in the water so you don't get splashed.)
And we still don't know if dead guys can keep a stiffy.
