Well... he officially ditched us.
« on: November 06, 2013, 05:42:14 am »

http://store.steampowered.com/app/219830/

Bailed on Soldat and he managed to get his new game (King Arthur's Gold) fully released on Steam and onto Steam's front page.

"King Arthur's Gold is a multiplayer game played with up to 32 players. Build castles and wage war on the enemy team as a knight, archer or builder in a fully destructible medieval world. It blends the best cooperative aspects of Lost Vikings, mashes them with Worms, with the visual style of Metal Slug, made by the creators of Soldat." - MM

Heh. I feel used. If it weren't for US still playing Soldat he wouldn't be able to provide the people buying his new game an idea of what kind of developer he is through www.soldat.pl because it wouldn't exist. How dare he use Soldat, a game he stopped developing while people were/ARE playing it, to promote himself and his new game.

But then again... it is HIS game. -.-

Soldat, Link-Dead, Berserker - all interesting games (which have probably never been done on a multiplayer-scale), all ditched

King Arthur's Gold is next on the ditch list.

You people are so terribly wrong. But oh well. I'm not going to get into fight.

EDIT: And it is full Steam release, not Greenlight.

Hah, like Akinaro already said: MM left Soldat years ago and gave other people the code so it would get updates.
If you paid for Soldat or spread the word, thank you! We don't need MM to work on the game, we have other people now.

Congrats to the KAG Devs for getting their game on steam, keep pushing ;)

Did you and the rest of the current Soldat dev team help create King Arthur's Gold?

If not, doesn't it bother you that he is making money off of your hard work by claiming that the same devs that worked on Soldat 1.6.6 made King Arthur's Gold? Because if the entire dev team were to quit/leave and all the Soldat players quit/left, there would be no Soldat for him to reference in the first place.

Basically... the devs/players right now are keeping Soldat alive so MM can have a foundation and reference it. He played you guys very very VERY hard and VERY smart if this is the case.

There is a reason he didn't mention his previous games... because there is no solid foundation like Soldat's. There are people Googling Soldat RIGHT NOW after reading his Steam description thinking it's his work that he is doing right now. THEY THINK 1.6.6 IS CREATED BY MM!!

If yes, then good job working on 2 games at the same time. :)

Also, since he gave you (the devs) the source code... does that mean you don't need MM to submit the game to Steam but instead do it yourselves? And would a portion of the money go to Shoozza and devs if released on Steam instead of MM?

I don't know the copyright laws internationally. :(

I thank you and the dev team for your hard work by the way. Finishing the stuff he left you guys with.

He doesnt give a f, about soldat now, he want to make HIM famous, not game.
What a terrible person, he wants to get money out of games. How can somebody who's programming all day full time expect to get payed for his work? Jesus, so disgusting.

It actually looks kind of cool now, last time I tried I had 4 fps or so and it was just a complete mess.
Need to find beta key...

MM would own the rights of the games, the current devs could be seen as hired by MM, except without pay, or just internals (or what they're called) who don't actually get any pay. Everyone who signed up to work on soldat knew this, there's nothing unfair going on. MM did the base code and handeled things for a while, though, it'd be right of him to actually pay the dev team some for their work.

Well, that really sucks.

Sadly, I think money is getting the best of him.

Scrapping projects, ditching games, not giving ANY credit/money to the current devs who are working hard to keep his game updated and alive, discounting prices to his crappy game so it gets more sales (if he can even control the amount that is discounted by Valve)

I think it is going to get worse.

MM always say that soldat and KAG is HIS own game, he dont care to mention about others.
He left soldat years ago, YEARS! And he didnt do anything, MOST HARDEST AND PAINFUL WORK is in hand of Devs and players, without them soldat would end after 2005 as a another boring game made by one guy who didnt had more ideas how to show off this game.
SOLDAT IS MADE BY US! DEVs, Players, MapMakers, Server owners, without them MM would throw this game to trash bin after first beta.

I second this statement.

I suppose you think the same of people working in grocery stores. Money gets the better on them, they don't just work there to service others.
It's his job, ofc he needs to market it and work on new games he thinks can make it.

People who work at grocery stores do not scrap projects, do not ditch customers, give credit to others, give money to others (give money back to government then give it back to me because I get money from their taxes), they don't discount prices off of food, if they do all of these things they would get fired. And that's what MM needs to do... he needs to get fired from Soldat dev team and give the copyrights to the current dev team because he's not even on it.

The only thing people do when they get a lot of money from grocery stores is pay bills, electronics, maybe recreational drug use, doctors, expensive clothes, thats it.

Where did you get grocery store from? LOL

Did you think of it the other way around at all? I'm working on KAG and most of our player base haven't ever heard about Soldat. Now that it's mentioned during the release of Soldat people get to know about it.
"What the heck is Soldat? Wow it's free to play, let's try it." - that is probably general scenario now.
All your points seem to be taken out of just pure hatred towards MM which I don't know even where comes from.
As a Game Developer you have to develop new games. Soldat IS MM's property and always will be. That he moved on to another game which got popular on its own isn't a sin. Now at last after years of developing games he can pay off his bills.

EDIT: I've edited my post to fix my spelling mistakes and then I've fixed the quote in Control's post to reflect the changes made by me.

You can at the very least tell him to give credit to the current developers on Steam.

Edit: All this seems to be much much deeper between MM and devs. I think everyone should stop including me.

Well, it's more like a manager for a grocery store... it was the first job I could think of. Anyway, as a manager/owner you do get to scrap projects (campaigns), you do still pay taxes, and you do get to discount prices on the food in your grocery store. The giving credit to others is not entierly needed, you don't need to give credit to your empoyees. Ditching customers is also on you, if you don't like the customer, depending on where you live, you can have them leave.

It's his job, every game developer scraps a ton of games, some that gets known by some players and others that is never seen by another person. Soldat got fairly far, he tried marketing it, but it didn't work. He still needs money, so he started with another project, and it somewhat succeeded (I have no idea how big it is).
I think MM is still giving some credit to this dev team, I mean, whenever people come here they'll see who the developers are, obviously he didn't give credit to the current devs in the KAG trailer. MM is still the owner, he made soldat and made most of the game code, now there's a team that pushes out updates.

MM has done what most if not all indie developers have done in the past 3-4 years: switch to the make a quick buck scheme, which entails making retro style games in order to appeal to trends of 'gaming culture'.

Whatever the case, he was right to completely ditch and scrap Soldat, Link-Dead and Berserker. It brings him no money, it also doesn't garner himself attention, which games like KAG does.

It's unfortunate that is essentially what indie games are nowadays, cash cows which are utilized with minimal effort. Good game, integrity and innovation.

I think is absolutely fine for him to mention that he created Soldat. It is proof that he can produce excellent gameplay and ideas. There are plenty of people floating around out there who have played Soldat at some point and to those people it is a point that can help then decide if they are likely to enjoy KAG. To those that haven't played, give it a chance anyway, then see that he has also made a game called Soldat then maybe they will give Soldat a go, like Furai said.

The current devs keep Soldat going out of love for the game. MM clearly has the ability to conceive games that people love to play and mentioning that he made Soldat illustrates that point.

As I can see, he just advertised Soldat on KAG web page and Steam + he mentioned nowhere that Soldat is his game, actually, it turned out that soldat dev team has been working on KAG...

Most of you guys are ingrate, ignorant and whiny. I have the utmost respect for MM who is able to make a living off programming independent games such as Soldat, Link Dead or King Arthur's Gold. All of you grouchy kids should take a step back and think where your anger is coming from. MM has the right to do whatever he pleases with his creations. Soldat's team of developers chose to do the work without direct payment, but I have yet to hear one of them complain about it.

Although there are people who stand behind MM, who help him run the community or do the coding, who create maps, sprites or announcements on the forums, he is the man that had the actual idea of creating these games. And he is giving credits to these people - just not on the introductory post to the game. Not a single one of them has complained about not being credited or not being paid enough for their work and dedication. Yet you ingrates think you are able to actually judge MM, his work, or his attitude towards his own creations?

I know why I ceased most of my online activity related to Soldat. This community is a golden apple that is rotting from the inside. And you guys are the mould that bring tears into the eyes of those who dare take a bite from this apple that you call Soldat. You guys should be ashamed of the words you uttered so carelessly.

Well, on the plus side the KAG steam release--which I've been working with MM's KAG team for days about things like linking steam accounts to KAG accounts--this topic has been just what we've needed to make this old crumbly forum active again.

MM is an exceptional programmer and game developer. He does not sit in one place or spend time on projects that he feels are either "done" or not going to be revolutionary. Soldat is "done" in his eyes, and it has been adopted successfully by Shoozza and his devteam. Berserker and Link-dead (and R and Crimsonglory) worked to enrich MM's game development skills and set the stage for KAG.

I trust MM and stand by his decisions 100%. Everything said by Furai and DarkCrusade in this thread is golden.

Its pathetic to say that One person create whole game community that works better without him.

And best part is that even if he dont give a F about soldat, he still take money from registry! He dont give a F about dev Team that spend looooots of time making this game. I know that its his game but OMG what a douchbag he is doing it. they doing most of work, and he say that its his merits...

What in the holy hell? I'm surprised about how much random new people have been raging in this thread. It's as if you want to have something to whine about to feel important or something, despite the fact that none of what you've posted has anything to do with you whatsoever.

How would you like it if Valve/Bungie/RARE/Whoever made one game, put all of their resources into actively maintaining it, and never made any subsequent games?

Whether the devteam gets paid or not for their Soldat contributions is their business, not yours; do you see them talking about it anywhere publicly?

MM does give "a F" about Soldat. In fact, he gives many "F"s. In ~2007, instead of abandoning the game when he decided to pursue other interests, he left it in the (mostly) capable hands of EnEsCe. He kept close watch on EnEsCe, and when he messed up (I'm not going to detail that situation here), he transferred Soldat's development to Shoozza/et al. Just like with EnEsCe, if Shoozza/etc did something really bad (won't happen as anyone who works with Shoozza is well aware that he is one OCD perfectionistic motherfucker), MM would take Soldat out of their hands and either work on it again himself or find another team willing to put good work into it.

Which version was the last one developed by Michal himself and where can I find it? It would be interesting to try.
