Link-Dead ? It's really dead ?
« on: March 12, 2014, 10:13:45 am »
Well I just want to ask you guys, a game by MM: Link-Dead. I watched an alpha clip of it(a looooong time ago), and it's very awesome, 2.5D graphic, hardcore shooting... It's been 5 months since my first time I knew about Link-Dead.
But I always keep catch up the site, download site still : ''Downloads  are suspended until fuuuuuuurther notice''.

I'm waiting, waiting, waiting, even I have finished TWD and it's just nothing news.

Anyone help me with this ? Have anyone played Link-Dead ?

I think he realized that it was boring and started coding KAG instead. Now he's working on some other junk where you play a wheelchair hobo in Victorian England or something.

I thought he officially announced that he's dropping Link-Dead and refunding everyone who bought the alpha, so I'm surprised the official page for this game hasn't been updated. But yeah, Link-Dead is dead indeed, and MM is working on KAG instead.

Link please, unless you were joking. I'm curious.

It's called "Transmigration - Into Darkness Peering".
Quote
“We don’t wish to give out any details yet. Let’s say we want to create an atmospheric and memorable experience. Currently, the team working on this project consists of three weird people with twisted ideas – Michał Marcinkowski, Mateusz Drabik, a really talented graphic artist, and me [Maciej Górny]. It’s a rainy kind of game. And there are antidepressants involved.”

There are several other things MM (and friends) are currently working on, but Linked-Dead was cancelled years ago after which Sigvatr left THD and MM started KAG.

This game has been abandoned long time ago.
The reason was "there is too much stuff added into the game".
There is even more stuff in KAG now.

It's very poor that there is nothing written about that on http://link-dead.thd.vg/en/ .

Well... if you were dedicated to this game you should actually know you had to read MM's devlog to follow Link-Dead's progress. It's even linked on that website. Which in fact nobody really cared about. If you've donated to play the alpha-version you were using the Link-Dead forum anyway.

Yeah MM stopped working on LD long time ago and I didn't hear anything about LD from him since then. So unless someone else picks it up it it's not going anywhere.
He actually gave me access to the code a few days before he stopped.

From what I've heard, the game had too many features (including gfx stuff) and the codebase became an unmaintainable mess.

And it was written in c++ which meant it took ages to compile.

That must be why be C++ never became a dominant global force, especially not for game development. How naive of developers to think that they can be successful without Delphi.

Sarcasm <3 :)

And correct me if I'm wrong, a large c++ app only takes a long time to compile the first time around, as subsequent times just recompile the individual source/object files that changed and then links them all together to create the binary again.

Pretty much, unless you change a header file as all files depending on it would need to recompile. Each file usually includes a dozen source files and headers each, which in turn includes a bunch more, and so on. The amount of random file reads and parses goes up exponentially with the size of the project. I also suspect that the C++ syntax is one of the most ambiguous, extended and bloated ones out there, which doesn't help.

afaik a lot of big projects decide early on which features of c++ they're going to ignore, like whether they'll use exceptions or what degree of templating

Well regardless, changing a git branch and building the changed files in a large C++ solution at my work usually means a coffee and Street Fighter break.

If I may ask, what are the specs of your boxes? I don't know if C compiles faster or slower than C++ (I'm guessing faster) but at my last job I compiled full Linux kernels (over 15 million lines of C) in barely 10 minutes on boxes with 24 logical cores (xeon; make -j 24) and 64GB ram. This process can take up to an hour or so on more modest hardware.

I think having proper specs definitely makes compilation go faster, especially since workstation computers are increasingly getting really monster.

Depends on the developer. I'm probably the worst example as in my case I'm running Windows 7 with Visual Studio 2012 in Virtualbox, with three cores available, 4.5 GB RAM and a 7200 RPM drive. The host OS is Linux Mint. A full rebuild will take almost 30 minutes, but the same guest OS can fully rebuild Java projects ten times in size, in around a minute.

Developers who have less restricted setups and SSDs can rebuild the C++ solution in around 10 minutes.

MM is all about King Arthur's Gold these days. Check his blog: http://mm.soldat.pl/
The Blog is not really used actively but you can follow him on FB facebook.com/michal.marcinkowski
Also, he is no longer really focusing on KAG now. All they do now is fixing minor bugs to keep the game up to date. (from what I know)

MM is doing a new game called : Transmigration Into Darkness Peering
official website

Doesn't look like a multiplayer game though..

We've been showing the game together with MM, Geti, Trainchaser and Shadlington at the AMAZE Berlin event few weeks ago. People were interested in the game. As I've played it - I'd call it "alternative" game. It shows the difficulties of the handicapped man's life. It is an adventure/story/single player game.

I feel I should share this:

What ends up happening every now and then is MM will message me asking me to set up the DNS zonefile and vhost/web hosting for an extremely random sounding domain name he just bought, in this case it was intodarknesspeering.com. Sometimes he'll also ask me to set him up vanilla wordpress and give him the login info for an admin account. Other times it'll be a strangely named mercurial repo.

And then a while later I generally go back and see what he's put up and usually my reaction is "what the fuck is this shit?"

Being a sysadmin for THD is honestly very entertaining sometimes.

There was actually no sarcasm included. (Though I can see now that it sounds like that.)
I can really imagine such MM-situations.

And there's no need to tell me who you are. I know how much you're doing for THD and it's projects.  :)
