The Foundation Series, pretty much any Heinlein, Asimov, or Clarke.

These, to name a few.

I see no one has ever read "Battlefield Earth", which IMO is the best book ever written (and don't assume it sucks because you saw the movie).

I assume is sucks because it's by L. Ron Hubbard, Scientology creator and all around quack.

I know about foundation, but I don't find it that great......I've read songs of a distance earth from clarke. The original starship troopers is kind of outdated...ish

What's the forever war like?

Eh, with the older (read: better) authors, you have to deal with a little bit of what science fiction was back then, so things tend to sound kooky if you're not in the right mindset.

L. Ron Hubbard, on the other hand, isn't that great of a writer -- it's not because he's the creator of Scientology, he's just not all that skilled.  I've been trying to read a book of his for several months, but it's taking forever because he never changes a scene -- the characters have all been in the exact same location for several hundred pages, doing the same things over and over again, and I'm just tired of reading it.

I can explain this. Your body thetan level is very high, they are preventing you from enjoying and understanding LaFayettes excellent works. You should look into getting an audit.

Enders Game series is the best. I've read the original (Ender's Game) probably over 10 times, and the series mroe than twice each. Orson Scott Card is a brilliant writer, and this new book he's coming out with that ties the Bean story and Ender's story together will be the first time i'm excited enough for a book that i'm going to go and buy it as soon as it's out.

See someone agrees with me. Ender fucking rocks.

GUYS REASON WHY YOUR STORIES ARENT ON MY LIST IS EITHER NEVER READ THEM, OR THOUGHT THEY SUCKED.

Make your own lists.

Make your own lists.

Wraithlike's List of Great Science Fiction Stories:

1. 1984 by George Orwell
A wonderful look at government set in a bleak future. Simply one of the greatest stories with great underlying meanings.

2. A Scanner Darkly by Phillip K D!ck (book)
Set in the near future where a drug use is rampant due to the mysterious "Substance D". The atmosphere D!ck sets really sets this apart from others.

3. The Sirens of Titan by Kurt Vonnegut
This is a classic Vonnegut title with an amazing plot, and wonderful story. The tone it sets is great and pokes fun at religion in Vonnegut's dark style.

4. Blade Runner / Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?
The plot is wonderful, and is better expressed in the book, but the atmosphere made in the movie outs them on a near equal level.

5. Star Wars Original Trilogy (Movies)
These are the classic Sci-fi movies, In my opinion much better that the the second three made.

6. Cube Trilogy (Movies)
These movies, though having a veiled, confusing plot, offer the viewer a creepy setting and dreary environment, and well as a entertaining story revealed through out the three. But their main High point is the unbelieveably large amount of gore contained, including people being liquified into a bloody pile, and multiple dismemberments.

7. Event Horizon (Movie)
They might as well have called this movie "Satan on a Space Ship", because it contains all the necesary elements for such a movie: Satan, a black guy, and a space ship.

8. The origional Matrix (Movie)
This movie sets a nice bleak world, and a bleaker second world, it is joined by a well written story. The thing that really lessen this movie, is the shittyness of its two sequels.

9. 1213 (Game)
The latest AGS made game by Ben 'Yahtzee' Croshaw, though having shabby grafics, the amazing plot played out through the three short games makes this game worthwhile.

10. I'm giving this last slot to all the other great Sci-fi series out there, from Andromeda to the X-files, they all deserve some credit.

All the above is the opinion of Wraithlike, so as is customary, it should be taken as divine truth.

Oh no, really?  Shoot.  Let me just get out my checkbook...you do accept checks, right?
