hotmail.com and mail.ru e-mail addresses banned
« on: August 25, 2006, 08:43:33 pm »
Due to the problems mentioned at http://forums.soldat.pl/index.php?topic=1403.0 hotmail e-mail addreses are no longer allowed to register on these forums.  My apologies for the inconvenience done to anyone.

Furthermore, all but 1 of the 50 people registered with mail.ru e-mail addresses have been spammers, most likely bots.  I have banned this e-mail address from registering in an attempt to temporarily block some of the spam bots we've been seeing.

Post any concerns or comments here.

flieslikeabrick, this is a bad idea. wouldnt it be better to instead setup a text recognition system for registration, that would cut down probably all the bots we have had.

EDIT:and also have a javascript that checks if @hotmail.com or @msn.com or @passport.com is in the email address it gives them a warning?

I'm not blocking these purely because of the bot thing.  hotmail has many other issues (look at the thread mentioned in my original post) and I have no reason not to block mail.ru if the only people who use it on these forums are spammers.  This is more lenient than some other forums, where they block just about all free e-mail accounts.

Nobody is harmed by this, if they were then I wouldn't do it.  I may remove the mail.ru block after I can add something else for keeping bots out.

I cannot add a text recognition system for these forums because there is not a mod for it that is compatible with these forums.  I am looking into other ways of modifying the forums to keep the bots out, but I need to do it by hand and I don't have the time to do that right now.

The registration page now says that mail.ru and hotmail.com addresses are blocked.

I have not blocked msn.com and passport.com because they are not nearly as common as hotmail and don't seem to be having the same problems that hotmail is.

But hotmail.com are one of the most common email address used. If it is blocked, it might cause problems when new users make an account. And it doesn't seem like a lot of people are having the problem to such that you have to block the email address off. For most (it seems), it ends up in their junk-email mostly.

I have resolved all of the issues with the spam filtering a long time ago, it just took microsoft a long, long time to get the changes into their system.  This is all stemming from another problem with hotmail where they accept the message from my server, but then they manage to lose it while transferring it to the user's inbox.  The problem is more common than you'd think, you can't see the list of unactivated accounts ;)  About 95% of the unactivated accounts are hotmail users.

I, and many other server and forum admins, refuse to support a shoddy e-mail service that refuses to fix their servers after years of the problem existing and being constantly recorded.

You just kicked out Russia :P

But so have we at Metanet. We were bombarded with bots constantly until we banned that address; now, although they've lessened a bit, the bots are diversifying their e-mails (and validating them oO').

It's the image-text validation, right?

Blast you. IPB doesn't support that :P

I'm fairly certain everyone here has a legit e-mail address.  They should be using those e-mail addresses that they normally use so that an admin or other player can reach them if they need to.

The whole point of e-mail address validation is to make sure that you use something you can actually get to and use.

I used a hotmail address to register here, and it came through perfectly.

But I guess that this change is for the well being of the forum.

Maybe this person/bot registered before the mail.ru address was banned, but the latest one to pop up (internet casino) is a mail.ru address.

On a side note, I was curious about something.  In the WOW relief topic, I actually had a serious question.  Is there any legal means to follow against these people?  I know it's the internet, but come on...trying to advertise drugs to a forum where so many people are under age has to have some sort of repercussion.
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams it is
still a beautiful world.  Strive to be happy.

I only added these to the ban list recently, this means that nobody can register with those addresses from now on.  It won't effect anyone who registered before then.
