640x480 etc
« on: January 31, 2016, 06:08:04 am »
I don't know if Shoozzaa gave an answer that makes sense, but it's still on my mind (like this).
Why you keep treating 640x480 like an "acceptable" resolution?

My suggestion was: Check a resolution database like the Steam db and pick the lower and common resolution used on notebooks (the smaller screen that the majority would use to play Soldat).
I think that supporting 640x480, 800x600 etc you're messing with what really matters (the higher and common resolutions nowadays).

welll, It doesn't really hurt anyone and as Soldat is a game made for low-end systems. I'd maybe not remove it.

1.7 changed the status "made for low-end systems". That's why I'm asking about lower resolutions.
Design the game basing on higher resolutions, add proper screen padding/margin/safe area for int/texts, fix the alignments and add a nice GUI, otherwise you'll be always supporting "shit" and messing with the rest!?

As I said before low system config doesnt mean res like 640x480

Even cheapest netbook have screen bigger than 1024x600 today, no one use 4:3 aspect anymore.
Even laptop from 2009 have typical res of 1366x768. I still have my beloved Asus Eee PC netbook with something that just act like graphic card(Intel GMA) and even with native res of 1024x600 soldat 1.7 work and look good and i have steady 60fps just like limit is set. And if someone have lags problem with their machines I seriously think they just messed something and its not game at all. Because trust me this netbook is for writing and occasional net browsing and its not made for gaming. So if something so weak like it run 1.7 with nice framerate you need to have calculator from 1995 not PC.

Just set minimal res to 960x540 or 1024x576 to keep 16:9 aspect ratio.
That would be good for keeping quality and compatibility with every graphic on typical screens, especially with interfaces because those have most problems with res.

It "hurts" the limited time the Soldat devs have. Having to support even more configurations only complicates the work. With less supported resolutions it's easier to finalize the interface and get the alignement and spacing right.

Also one example: In my "font.ini" I have set "FontConsoleSize" and "FontConsoleSmallSize" to the same value. Why? With the widescreen resolutions everybody uses today there is no need to display long names in a smaller fontsize. Even with the longest names (24 chars) they are still far on the right. (Like you can see here for example.) And I dont know of any other places where a long name gets shrinked to the "SmallSize".
No difference between man and mouse - both end up in pussy.

could support widescreen right away, w/o shit resizing shit that looks like shit. My guess is that no1 uses CRT no more, actually no1 plays it no more so ya... but for the intellectual discussion lets say ya could just have some sort of modern (2001 onwards) adjustments.

I think its more about forcing widescreen as a default format in 1.7, and keeping specific resolutions to keep any interface and graphic consistent, instead of keeping in mind every possible format out there and then wondering how to fit everything without weird bugs.

Its not big problem now, but it could remove any future problems with interfaces and fonts in custom graphic(if anyone in future would make it)

Its limiting game in some way but in the same time keeping quality. Its also not that big problem because it would be nothing more like removing every old/weird resolution and keeping only eg:
854x480
1024x576
1280x720 (default)
1366x768
1600x900
1920x1080
2560x1440
3840x2160

and option for custom res, so IF someone want other res he can set it here, but he need to aware that some graphic can be rendered wrong.

Lots of game force specific resolutions from the list, and to be more funny, especially games with 2D graphic because it just a best way to keep good look of game like authors wanted to show it in the first place.
No one annoy them with wining "but graphic is stretched!" "my interface is cut off!" It just less worrying for devs.

It's not useless. It's something to keep in mind if the in-game GUI code is ever rewritten. It's not much that 640x480 is *activiley* supported. It's more like there are many things in soldat codebase that assume that as the base resolution (from what I've seen in the code).

The question is: You can design things with the 640x480 base resolution, not giving a damn for how bad it is on 640x480 and/or 800x600? Assuming that what you did is very good on 720p, 1080p, 4k...?
The useless part wasn't for the 640x480, but for the "support" that its visual still gets nowadays.

Example: Safe area for upper texts.
You're reducing "a lot" the player view on 640x480 and other small resolutions, but you're increasing the aesthetics for higher resolutions. In this case you can consider the repositioning as an exchange of space between these two areas because the kill log is almost in the middle of the screen.

4k is the future imo as the maxed resolution for decades, they (screen manufacturers ) will stop fighintg to expand resolution further and focus on quality like refresh rate, color quality, response rate and so on... but ya know, whats the point on having 4k Soldat if the textures are made for low res shit, also the whole aspect of Soldat is not smooth so even higher reso ya will be playing polygon 2d w/o immersion

Bio, check the new version. You're talking about earlier versions. Now we have HD textures etc.
