Help me choose a laptop
« on: August 26, 2006, 04:56:37 pm »
I'm going to uni in a few weeks, and it's occured to me that I need a laptop, and I know absolutely bugger all about them. Seeing as this is a computer internet based chat-forum-intersite, there should be some people who know what they're on about when it comes to laptops.
What I'm looking for is:
  • A good quality sound card
  • Something easy to carry
  • Not Apple
  • Wireless internets
I don't mind about having to get one built from bits, I know some people who can take care of that, as long as the parts are available in England.

Lenovo (IBM) thinkpad T60.  you won't regret it.

If that is too expensive, get any of the other T series ( I have a T42 and love it).

It's mostly going to be used for music since I'm doing a music degree, so graphics and such don't matter. I'm after high sound quality and a lot of disk space. Oh, and my budget is around £600.

Alienware is way overpriced. I would also reccomend the thinkpads as flab said, they are great notebooks and the batteries last forever.

Alienware is way overpriced.

That's kinda true, but they're still freaking good comps.  A friend of mine has a 5700 with a pricetag off around $2200, but it can handle Doom 3, F.E.A.R., HL2, and a crapload of other games at an excellent level, and it still takes care of all of his assignments.
To sum up my point: We had a multipage debate about toilet padding. (Putting TP in the water so you don't get splashed.)
And we still don't know if dead guys can keep a stiffy.
