Oceania and Jetpit
« on: August 26, 2006, 09:59:13 pm »
Both these mapsare designed to force aerial gameplay. Jetpit is, well, a giant pit. At the bottom are spikes. There is no place to lan, but plenty of powerups falling from the sky. Ocenia doesn't kill you, but it is a large map with few places to land that are actually visible. If you run out of gas, you fall into an "ocean" that won't prevent bullets from coming in but will prevent you from being seen. There are 2 easter eggs in this map, one fairly obvious, another which you'll hardly realize as an easter egg.

Jet-Pit-     DL: http://www.filefactory.com/file/4eb196/

Oceania-   DL: http://www.filefactory.com/file/9212a0/

Install buy putting them into your Soldat>Maps folder, par usual.

EDIT: These were taken in mapmaker because theyre big.

Thanks for offering up nothing helpful.  Really a quality post there.

This maps need a lot of work man.  Here are some tips for both maps.

*Scenery: Use it!  These maps are devoid of scenery, nothing to hide behind or utilize.  Even if they are meant to force aerial gameplay, there could be scenery in the water, or clouds in the sky.  Tinker with the transparency/color of sceneries to put some behind the player, some in front, and make the environment look real.  You could also use a better scenery for the water, it's too blue and looks kinda..odd.

*Shading: Again, use it!  All the polys are blocky, one color, and big.  Try using a few smaller polys to break up the larger ones.  Look at some of the default maps and see how things are shaded and colored.  Playing on a big grey map is boring, spice it up a bit.

*Poly Placement: These maps are very basic.  Again, I know you were going for aerial gameplay...but in the future, spice things up a bit.  Add multiple routes, make the ground with more relief so Sodlats have places to duck and hide, hills to climb, etc.  Using more polys will help to smooth things out and get rid of nasty corners that could trap a player.

Hope these help a bit..most important, practice practice practice!  Don't give up even if people are critics, because there should be ones who give good advise as well.
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams it is
still a beautiful world.  Strive to be happy.

wow those one are ugly :X

still i like the basic concept of jetpit, i made one similar to that in my beginning days aswell.
i think you should not try to improve these but just sit down and keep them maps coming, and soon you'll get the hang of mapping. if you want to create a better looking map try to shade the polygons. the simplest way to do this is darken the lower parts of a polygon and lighten the upper part, but also try to work with different colours, otherwise it'll look boring. and pleeeaaase use some scenery

also, to achieve better ideas that you have draw your maps on a piece of paper, then scan them and set the scanned pic as a scenery and then color in the areas with polygons.

Same as Avarax :P. When I make a map, I just start thinking about it while I make it, lol. I should draw it first in a piece of paper and then make it in PW.

Thanks for the advice. I can't put any scenery in Jetpit, because it's Jetpit. I can't just, you know, make a cloud in the middle of a well like pit with spikes. Also, I might put some extra clouds in the Oceania map, but that's alot of clouds...

Does anyone know if you can make a semi-transparent polygon?

The only way to do that is to try to mimic the background colors. Untexture the polygon(s) in question via PW to achieve a better graphic for it (/them).

Actually I was thinking that I could have the top of the water semi-transparent but the bottom opaque. Too bad it can' be done though.

Since this is turning in to a flame fest, I'll be locking.

Keep it on topic next time.  And Pete, I'll be keeping an eye on you, so try and be more helpful and less spiteful.
